Spartan post player Leo Gonzalez missed the game after injuring a knee in a game against Montesano.

“Obviously without Leo, Peterson got every single rebound he wanted and most of their points came off of offensive rebounds,” Forks coach Rick Gooding said.

VASHON — The fourth-ranked Class 1A Pirates proved too much for Chimacum to handle as Chimacum lost their second game in as many days on the road on Friday.

The Cowboys fell 58-33 to Port Townsend on Thursday (See story on Page B1).

“Vashon is undefeated and beat [Olympic League-leading] Bremerton, and really they are a pretty good team, but we couldn’t hit any shots,” Chimacum coach Jim Eldridge said.

“We missed some easy shots in that first half, layups and short stuff that we normally hit, and we just couldn’t throw it in the ocean.”

Victor Hitt led Chimacum with eight points. Orion Weller added six for the Cowboys (0-6, 1-9) who host Seattle Christian on Tuesday.

Girls Basketball

Chimacum 36, Vashon Island 29

VASHON — Chimacum picked up its first win of the season on the road after receiving big performances from seniors Lauren Thacker and Mechelle Nisbet.

“Mechelle Nisbet and Lauren Thacker carried the scoring load and contributed big on defense as well,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said.

Thacker had 15 points and Nisbet 11 to lead the Cowboys (1-5, 1-7).

“Megan Dukek was huge on the boards, snagging double-digit boards, and the team did a great job keeping composure early to erase an early deficit, and down the stretch to maintain the lead and close out the game,” Huntingford said.

Chimacum hosts Seattle Christian on Tuesday.

Forks 39, Tenino 36

TENINO — Forks freshman Skyler DeMatties stepped in as point guard for the Spartans and lead her team to an important road victory on Friday night.

“She did a fantastic job filling in for our normal point guard [Halle Palmer]. DeMatties led us in scoring with nine and hit three big free throws in the fourth quarter,” Forks coach Al Scheibner said.

“We are battling with Tenino in the standings and it’s pretty likely the winner of this one will probably go as the sixth seed to districts.”

Tenino employed a box-and-one defense on Forks’ Courtnie Paul, holding the Spartans leading scorer to seven points, so DeMatties’ performance was sorely needed.

DeMatties’ hit a pair of free throws with 47 seconds left to give Forks a 39-34 lead.

Tenino scored to close within a 3-point basket of forcing overtime, but the Spartans defended well on the potential game-tying shot and grabbed the rebound for the win.

Forks (1-5, 4-7) plays at Neah Bay on Monday.
