“We had a rough start to the year but have won our last two matches. It’s good to see the girls beginning to round into form and play the way I know they could.”

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders’ rally from a 2-0 deficit came up just short in a 15-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-22, 12-15 loss to the Trojans.
“We started off the game slowly but gained strength and energy as the night went on,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said.
“Dawn Oliver came in after the first set and served tough for us the rest of the night, which helped us gain momentum in games three and four.
“This is the second match in a row that we’ve lost in a close set five. It’s great to see the girls fight hard through the end. It’s positive improvement.”
Lexi Braun led the Riders with seven kills, Alyssa Wetzler had five aces and 13 digs and Emily Johnson had nine digs, four kills and three aces.
Nizhoni Wheeler chipped in with five kills and three aces and Kylie McVaugh had six aces, six digs and two kills for Port Angeles (1-6, 1-6).

PORT ANGELES — The Trojans toppled the Roughriders, scoring first in the game’s second minute, a goal that set the tone for the game, according to Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley.
“They’re a really quality team” Moseley said. “They are active, pass well and are physical. They jumped on us pretty quickly.”
After falling behind 2-0 at half, the Riders made some adjustments that paid some dividends.
“We moved Madison St. George and Emily Boyd to midfield and Maddie Boe to a more offensive position,” Moseley said.
Boe quickly ran down a ball in the corner and sent a shot to the near post past the Olympic goalkeeper for her sixth goal of the season.
“The momentum swung in their favor for the first 15 minutes, but Olympic was able to score on a counterattack that essentially put the game out of reach,” Moseley said.
He recognized goalkeeper Zoe Owens for stopping 28 shots, along with defenders Kate Haworth and Cami Raber as defensive players of the game.
St. George and Boyd were praised for their work in transition and Boe as the offensive player of the match.
Port Angeles (2-2, 4-2) visits Klahowya on Tuesday.

POULSBO — The Redhawks won nine of 12 events and earned 17 district qualifying times
“We regained our ‘us’ and ‘we,’ we returned to what makes us strong, our sense of team,” Port Townsend coach Peter Braden said.
“We cheered like crazy, enjoyed swimming, and swam and dove well.”
Individual district qualifiers are Sarah Allen, Chloe Rogers and Ismay Gale in the 200 freestyle; Camille Ottaway, Corinne Pierson and Tanner Matthew in the 200 individual medley; Carinna Snider, Rose Ridder and Chloe Rogers in the 100 fly; Matthew in the 100 free; Allen and Ridder in the 100 backstroke; and Keira Matkins in the 100 breaststroke.
Rose Ridder broke her school record with a time of 1 minute, 8.36 seconds in the 100 back.
“I want to swim it again. I think I can go faster,” Ridder said after the race.
Port Townsend will host Sequim in a meet at the Sequim Aquatic Recreational Center on Thursday.
The Redhawks’ divers practice at SARC, and Port Townsend will be able to use times from that meet in a bid at more district qualifiers.
The Redhawks’ pool is not regulation size, so the times there cannot be used for qualifiers.
