PREP SPORTS: Forks wrestling wins Forks Invitational; other prep reports

FORKS — Forks opened its season by winning its own wrestling invitational.

The Spartans had to bow out of the Port Angeles Jamboree earlier in the week due to snow, and there was some question as to whether the weather would cancel the Forks Invitational as well.

“We were also worried that we might not be able to have the Forks Invite because the freezing weather,” Spartans coach Bob Wheeler said.

Seven of the other 10 scheduled teams showed up, so the tournament did take place.

The Spartans took the tournament with a team score of 222. Port Angeles was second at 188, then Elma with 161, Sehome with 137 and Port Townsend placed fifth with 110 points.

Tenino (78 points), Sequim (46) and Juanita (26) were the other teams participating.

“We did well because overall the kids wrestled hard and did not give up,” Wheeler said.

“We have a lot of things that we still really need to work on, so as long as they keep working hard they should just get better.”

Forks had four champions, five second-place finishes, one third-place wrestler and one who took fourth.

Last season’s 1A state runner-up Miguel Morales won the 285-pound division for the Spartans.

Other Forks wrestlers taking first were 113-pounder Sebastian Morales, 132-pounder Sebastion Barragan and 182-pounder Nathan Gimlin.

Taking second place for the Spartans were Alvaro Ortiz (120), Nanito Sanchez (132), Ricky Barragan (138), Javier Contreras (145), Abisai Garcia (152) and Gavin Castaneda (220).

“We have a lot of experienced kids, and most of them did well, as expected,” Wheeler said.

“But we also had some younger kids who did well, which should make us even tougher as the season goes on.”

For Port Angeles, Cody Anderson (106 pounds), Brady Anderson (120 pounds) and Ozzy Swagerty (126 pounds) were all champions.

The Roughriders had four other wrestlers finish second: Ben Basden (106), Tyler Gale (113), Evan Gallacci (182) and Roberto Coronel (285).

Port Angeles coach Erik Gonzalez named Gallacci the Roughrider wrestler of the week for reaching the finals in his first varsity wrestling tournament and finishing with two pins on the day.

Sequim’s top finishers were Royhon Agostine (138 pounds) and Michael Lattimer (220 pounds), who both finished third in their respective weight classes.

Trevor Garrett of Port Townsend placed second in the 195-pound division for the Redskins’ top finish.

Quileute’s Jonathan Law finished fifth in the 285-pound class.
