PREP SPORTS: Forks wrestling wins sub-regional championship; other area reports

Editor’s note: Updated to include the first-place finish of Forks wrestler Jack Dahlgren.

ELMA — Forks overwhelmed the rest of the Evergreen League to claim the sub-regional championship.

The Spartans scored 255.5 points, far ahead of second-place Montesano’s 193.5.

Five Forks wrestlers won sub-regional championships and 14 advanced to this Saturday’s regional meet in Hoquiam.

Javier Contreras is the 145-pound champion, Joel Mohn won the 152-pound class, Jack Dahlgren earned the 182-pound title, Dimitri Sampson took first at 195 pounds and Miguel Morales claimed the heavyweight title by defeating teammate Tristan Tumaua in the final.

Johnny Lua was the runner-up to Mohn in the 152-pound class.

Also placing second for the Spartans were Sebastian Morales at 113 pounds and Alvaro Ortiz at 120 pounds.

“For the most part, our kids wrestled well,” Forks coach Bob Wheeler said of Saturday’s

sub-regional tournament.

“We had a few disappointments, but that always happens.

“We are still looking for some improvements from a few kids for next week. We will need it.

“As we move up the ladder to state, the scores will get more spread out between the schools.”

The top four finishers at sub-regionals move on to regionals.

Forks’ other five regional qualifiers are Alan Ensastegui, who was third at 120 pounds; Joseph Mariner, third at 138 pounds; Reece Moody, third at 170; Kenny Gale, fourth at 160; and Garrison Schumack, fourth at 132 pounds.

Gavin Palmer is an alternate after placing fifth in the 132-pound bracket.

Saul Avila also placed for Forks, coming in sixth in the 126-pound class.

“Next week there will be some other good teams from the Trico League [that] will collect their share of the points,” Wheeler said.

“We will need to have some of our placers step up if we want to take the regional championship.

“We will need to take most of this week’s placers to the state tournament if we want to be a contender.”

The state meet will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, at the Tacoma Dome.

Port Townsend’s Shoop wins title

VASHON — Port Townsend’s Shae Shoop took first at the West Central District Class 1A sub-regional, winning the 120-pound championship.

The Redhawks had three other qualifiers: Jackson Schott (126 pounds), Henry Veitenhans (132) and Tanner Minnihan (182), all of whom placed fourth in their respective weight classes.

Peter Glitsch, who wrestles with Port Townsend but lives within the Quilcene School District, placed second at 120 pounds for Quilcene at the Class 1B/2B sub-regional at Darrington on Saturday.
