PORT ANGELES — A bevy of North Olympic Peninsula prep basketball, wrestling, swimming and gymnastics teams have reached or will reach the conclusion of their respective regular seasons this week.
At the Class 2A level, basketball scenarios are pretty cut and dry for Port Angeles and Sequim.
The Roughriders boys (6-4, 10-7) have clinched a district berth, and could finish as high as a tie for second if they beat Olympic (8-2, 14-4) on the road Tuesday night, knock off Kingston (7-4, 12-6) in another road game on Thursday and have league champion North Kitsap (10-0, 16-2) beat Olympic on Thursday.
The Olympic League’s No. 2 seed would play the South Puget Sound’s No. 8 at Foss High School at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8.
The No. 3 seed will take on the SPSL No. 4 at Wilson High School in Tacoma at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8 and the No. 4 will face the SPSL No. 6 at Wilson at 7:45 p.m. that same night.
District competitions are double elimination.
Sequim (0-11, 3-15) will miss out on the postseason for the second straight season.
Port Townsend (7-0, 13-3) clinched the Olympic League 1A Division crown earlier this month. The Redhawks, however, will have to play the waiting game before finding out their postseason opponent.
Port Townsend will play the winner of game between the Nisqually League No. 2 (Cascade Christian or Seattle Christian) and the winner of a pigtail playoff game between the Nisqually No. 4 (likely Bellevue Christian) and the Olympic No. 3 (likely Coupeville).
That game will be held at Bellarmine Prep in Tacoma at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15.
The winner will advance to the West Central District title game, also at Bellarmine, on Saturday, Feb. 18.
The loser will have a chance to reach regionals in a loser-out contest at Bellarmine on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Chimacum (3-4, 3-12) needs to have beaten Klahowya last night or in a game against the Eagles on Saturday, or have Port Townsend beat Coupeville to take the second seed to district play.
Chimacum wins any head-to-head tiebreaker with Coupeville after beating the Wolves twice in three games this season.
If the Cowboys finish as the No. 2 seed, they would host a loser-out contest against the Nisqually No. 3 at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11.
Forks (4-2, 12-6) is assured of a District 4 playoff spot, but could move up in seeding if they take care of business in two league games this week and get a little help.
If Forks beat Montesano last night and Tenino on Friday and the Bulldogs (5-1, 12-6) topped Hoquiam (6-1, 12-7) the Spartans would have a shot at a three-way split of the Evergreen League title.
The Evergreen League champ will host the Trico No. 4 at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9.
Forks also could take the league’s No. 2 seed if it beats Montesano and Tenino and Hoquiam beats Montesano. The Spartans would earn a district playoff game at home against the Trico League No. 3 (Stevenson or White Salmon) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9.
A Forks loss to Montesano and the Spartans are the league’s No. 3 seed and will travel to face Trico runner-up La Center on Feb. 9.
North Olympic League
Neah Bay (8-0, 15-3) is the North Olympic League champion and will play in the Tri-District Tournament, likely in Port Angeles, on Thursday, Feb. 16.
Crescent is the league’s No. 3 seed and will play the Sea-Tac League No. 4 in a loser-out contest at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Girls Basketball
Port Angeles (6-4, 9-8) entered Tuesday’s home game against Olympic in third place and a game ahead of Kingston (5-6, 9-9) in the Olympic League 2A Division standings.
The top four teams advance to the district playoffs.
It’s possible the Roughriders could finish in a tie for second with Olympic (8-2, 14-4), but they will have needed to take care of the Trojans last night, beat Kingston on Thursday and hope league leading North Kitsap (9-1, 15-3) overwhelms Olympic on Thursday.
The most likely scenario will see Port Angeles hosting Kingston (5-6, 9-9) on Thursday with the No. 3 playoff spot going to the winner.
Sequim (4-7, 6-12) also has a slim shot at the playoffs. The Wolves need to have beaten North Mason last night and have Port Angeles knock off Kingston to tie for the fourth seed to districts. A three-way tie for fourth with Bremerton also is possible, but the Knights have to beat North Kitsap.
The Olympic No. 3 will face the South Puget Sound League No. 4 at Wilson High School in Tacoma at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9.
The Olympic No. 4 will play the South Puget Sound League No. 3 at Wilson at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9.
In the Olympic League 1A Division, the playoff path is mostly determined.
Coupeville (8-0, 14-3) won the league title and will receive the No. 1 seed to the district tournament.
Port Townsend (4-3, 8-7) is the second seed to district play by virtue of taking two of three contests from rival Chimacum during the season.
The Redhawks will host a loser-out playoff against the Nisqually League No. 3, likely Cascade Christian or Vashon, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. Port Townsend beat Vashon 42-37 in a nonleague contest earlier this season.
The Redhawks and Cascade Christian did not meet this season.
Chimacum (2-5, 9-9) will earn the No. 3 seed if the Cowboys can win against cellar-dwelling Klahowya in games against the Eagles late Tuesday and Saturday.
A Chimacum win will clinch a loser-out pigtail playoff game at home against the Nisqually League No. 4 (Vashon or Cascade Christian) on Thursday, Feb. 9.
The Forks girls (2-5, 4-12) remain in the hunt for a Southwest District 4 playoff berth, the school’s first playoff appearance since the 2008-2009 season.
The Spartans can clinch a berth with a win at Tenino (1-5, 10-7) on Friday.
A road playoff game against the Trico League No. 1 or No. 2 (La Center or Seton Catholic) on Friday, Feb. 10 would await the Spartans.
North Olympic League
Neah Bay (8-0, 15-3) is the North Olympic League champion and will play in the Tri-District Tournament, likely in Port Angeles, on Thursday, Feb. 16.
Clallam Bay (4-3, 11-5) is the No. 2 seed and will host the District 1 No. 4 in a loser-out game on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Crescent (3-4, 5-9) is the league’s No. 3 seed and will play the Sea-Tac League No. 4 in a loser-out contest on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Wrestling
The road to Mat Classic XXIX, the state wrestling tournament in the Tacoma Dome Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18, begins this weekend with subregional wrestling tournaments for boys and girls grapplers.
Class 2A male wrestlers from Port Angeles and Sequim will compete in the Olympic League Sub-Regional at North Mason High School on Saturday.
Boys wrestlers from Port Townsend and Chimacum will grapple in the West Central District 3 1A sub-regional at Vashon High School on Saturday.
Female wrestlers from Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend will wrestle in the West Central District 3 Girls Sub-Regional at Emerald Ridge High School in Puyallup on Saturday.
Forks’ boys wrestlers will compete in the Evergreen League Sub-Regional at Elma on Saturday.
The Spartans’ girls will wrestle in the District 4 North 2A/1A/2B Sub-Regional at Centralia’s Northwest Sports Hub on Saturday.
Swimming
Boys swimmers from Port Angeles, Sequim and Chimacum competed late Tuesday in the Last Chance Divisional Invitational, the final opportunity to swim a district qualifying time or better a time for district seeding.
Swimmers will compete in the West Central District 3 Boys Swimming and Diving Championship at Hazen High School in Renton on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11.
Gymnastics
Gymnasts from Port Angeles and Sequim will compete in the Class 2A/3A Sub-regional Gymnastics Championships at Auburn Mountainview High School at 6:35 p.m. Thursday.
Individuals and teams who score well will advance to the West Central District Championship at Auburn Mountainview on Saturday, Feb. 11.
