PREP SPORTS: Port Angeles baseball knocks off Shelton; other area reports

SHELTON — Port Angeles went on the road and defeated Shelton 8-6 in nonleague baseball action.

Janson Pederson struck out six and allowed six hits and six runs over six innings to earn the win for the Class 2A Roughriders over the 3A Highclimbers.

Pederson also had a hit and helped his own cause by contributing on four of the Riders’ eight runs, scoring three and driving in another in Saturday’s game.

“Janson did a great job,” Port Angeles coach Vic Reykdal said.

“He spread out his hits and three walks is a good day, and he’s had a little bit of a problem with those.

“He kept the ball down, and we played error-free baseball.”

Due to the Riders being at the end of a busy week and the nonleague nature of Saturday’s game, Reykdal started all four of Port Angeles’ bench players.

One of them, Micaiah Anderson, took advantage of the playing time, boosting the Riders with two hits, two walks and a run.

“It was fun to watch Michaiah,” Reykdal said. “He had a great day. It was fun to watch him contribute.”

Logan Ciaciuch swung the heftiest bat for Port Angeles, going 3 for 5 and driving in three runs.

The shortstop also helped lock down his side of infield.

“Chooch and Matt Hendry played great defense on that left side,” Reykdal said.

Next up for Port Angeles (4-2, 6-4) is another nonleague tilt, this time at Port Townsend (0-2, 0-7) on Tuesday.

After that, the Riders begin the second half of the Olympic League 2A schedule against Kingston on Friday at Civic Field.

Port Angeles is in third place, a half-game ahead of Sequim (3-2, 7-4) and within a game of Olympic (5-1, 7-4) and North Kitsap (4-1, 8-2).

“The second half is going to be fun,” Reykdal said.

Coupeville 22, Chimacum 21

COUPEVILLE — So that’s how Olympic League 1A softball is going to be in the division’s inaugural season.

The Cowboys and Wolves battled back and forth before Coupeville finally prevailed with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“It was a little crazy,” Chimacum coach Junior Roberts said of Thursday’s game.

After a first inning in which the Cowboys put up four runs and the Wolves scored six, Coupeville opened up a 14-5 lead after two innings and a 19-10 lead after five.

Within one run of being run-ruled, Chimacum instead rallied. Big time.

The Cowboys put up eight runs in the sixth and three more in their half of the seventh to take a 21-19 lead into the bottom of the inning.

“It was a tough loss, but we dug a pretty deep hole, and they made the play at the end,” Roberts said.

“I’m proud of my players for digging out of that hole.

“It was a learning lesson. You can’t dig yourself into that big of a hole and expect to come back.”

But Coupeville erased Chimacum’s lead and then some on Katrina McGranahan’s game-winning three-run double.

“She hit a ball over our right fielder’s head,” Roberts said.

“That was my fault, I didn’t tell her to move back.

“Throughout the game, I made, as a coach, some positioning errors. I didn’t put them in the position to make plays.”

Coupeville moves to the top of the Olympic League 1A standings, though Klahowya has yet to play a league game.

Chimacum (1-1, 4-3) plays at Kingston (2-1, 4-1) today.

QUILCENE — Sammy Rae hit two home runs and drove in eight runs for the Rangers.

Oh, and she also pitched a no-hitter, striking out 14 batters.

Wednesday’s win was far from a one-Ranger show, however.

Erin Macedo also homered, and was one pesky single shy of hitting for the cycle.

Megan Weller had three hits and two RBIs, and Katie Bailey and Katie Love each had a pair of hits, with Love driving in three runs.

“We are getting contributions up and down the batting order. This is the second time this season everyone in the starting lineup contributed a hit,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said.

“The Mustangs have some good young players. They will improve and do well in our league.”

The Rangers jumped on Rainier Christian early, plating 11 runs in the first inning after having two outs and nobody on. The scoring began with back-to-back homers by Rae and Macedo.

Love chipped in with a two-run single later in the inning. She also had an RBI single in Quilcene’s five-run second inning.

The six-run fourth was highlighted by Rae’s three-run home run. Jordan Cawyer added an RBI single.

The Rangers (2-0, 6-1) improve to 2-0 in SeaTac League play with the win.

They face Evergreen Lutheran (0-1, 1-2) at home today.

The Quilcene JV squad played the Mustangs in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader, losing 12-9.

Stephany Brown was a batter of note for the Rangers, with a two-run single in the first inning.
