PORT ANGELES — New season, new Roughriders.
Port Angeles moved to 2-0 on the season by holding off Olympic 74-72 in Olympic League boys basketball action.
Last year, the Riders finished near the bottom of the league, while the Trojans shared the league championship with Sequim.
Port Angeles had four players score in double figures, led by junior Hunter Hathaway with 21 points. Hayden Gunderson scored 19, which included making 6 of 7 free throws.
As a team, Port Angles was 21-30 at the free-throw line.
Derek Schumacher scored 12 points, blocked five shots and grabbed five rebounds for the Riders, and Brady Konopaski finished with 12 points and five assists.
Girls Basketball
Port Angeles 50, Olympic 45
BREMERTON — Maddy Hinrichs sealed the Roughriders’ win with four consecutive points.
After the Trojans cut the lead to 46-45 on a pair of free throws from freshman Katie Campana with 15 seconds left, Hinrichs was quickly fouled and hit both of her free throws to push Port Angeles’ lead back up to three points.
Hinrichs then followed a quick Olympic turnover with a breakaway lay-in with seven seconds left to give the Riders their five-point winning margin.
Hinrichs led Port Angeles with 21 points. She also had four assists and four steals.
Kylee Jeffers contributed 10 points to go along with five rebounds and four steals, Krista Johnson had eight points and a team-high seven rebounds and Nizhoni Wheeler scored six and dished out three assists.
“The senior trio of Maddy Hinrichs, Krista Johnson, and Kylee Jeffers provided great leadership and maturity throughout the game,” Port Angeles coach Mike Poindexter said.
“Kylee drew a tough defensive assignment against Olympic standout Olivia Williams and did an excellent job on both ends of the court.
“Krista led us in rebounds and showed solid floor leadership.
“Maddy not only scored 21 but shot 70 percent from the field in doing so, as well as 75 percent from the free-throw line.”
Wheeler, in her second game as a Roughrider, scored all of her six points and had three assists and two steals in the second half.
Port Angles moves to 2-0 on the season, 1-0 in Olympic League. The Riders travel to North Mason next Wednesday.
Klahowya 59, Chimacum 48
CHIMACUM — The Cowboys opened the season with a uptempo affair with the Eagles.
“This was fast paced to for 3 1/2 quarters — lots of free throws in the fourth — with both teams pressing each other all game and both teams getting early offense,” Chimacum coach Trevor Huntingford said of Thursday’s game.
Klawhoya jumped out to a 16-point lead at one point. The Cowboys cut it to nine in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get closer.
“The style we played defensively was pleasing, and if we just hit our free throws and capitalize on a few more of the open shots we had, this is our game,” Huntingford said.
“It was a respectable start of the year.”
The Cowboys shot 11 for 30 at the free-throw line.
Audrey and Lauren Thacker led Chimacum with 11 points apiece. Megan Dukek had nine and Kiersten Snyder finished with eight.
Quilcene 56, Puget Sound Adventist 6
QUILCENE — The Rangers took it to shorthanded Puget Sound Adventist in 1B Sea-Tac League action on Thursday.
“The Sharks were down one of their starters due to a back injury,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said.
“Regardless, [we] played strong and came out with a victory.
“The entire roster got a lot of playing time.”
Sophomore Megan Weller followed up the 30-point performance in the season opener with 28 points against the Sharks. She also had eight steals, five rebounds and two blocks
Allison Jones scored nine points, and Sammy Rae scored eight. Rae grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out six assists, and had four steals and two blocks.
Katlyn Hitt scored seven points, including a 3-pointer, and had five boards.
“The girls played solidly as a team and did an excellent job of seeing the floor,” Briana Weller said
“[We] did a lot of things well — rebounding, defense and hustle were a few of those.
“The girls are learning to pay attention to details and focusing on good fundamentals.”
Boys Swimming
Port Angeles 127, Kingston 52
PORT ANGELES — John Macias earned two state qualifying times as the Roughriders (1-0 Olympic League, 1-0 overall) started the season with a strong showing against the Bucaneers.
Overall, Port Angeles was first in nine of the 12 events, and seven individuals and two relay teams qualified for the district meet.
Macias qualified in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2 minutes and 11.31 seconds, and the 100 backstroke in 58.31 seconds.
Wei-Yan Fu also won two events, the 50 freestyle in 24.77 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 1:01.78.
The team of Jay Liang, Fu, Macias and Tristin Butler won the 200 medley relay with a district-qualifying time of 1:51.41, and Macias, Butler, Liang and Seth Bamer qualified as a team in the 400 free relay in 3:53.98.
Klahowya 94, Sequim 50
SILVERDALE — Eric Prosser qualified for districts for the Wolves in the 200-yard individual medley, and was only 7.5 seconds away from state qualification.
Most of Sequim’s swimmers were participating in the first meet of their careers.
“Zak Robinson in the 200 freestyle swam a great time and looks very promising as a strong competitor this season,” Wolves coach Linda Moats said.
“Christian Goodrich swam well in the 50 free, and we look for him to drop below 30 seconds in that event soon.”
Patrick McCrorie placed first by scoring well in the 1-meter dive.
“Overall, we’re very pleased with their performance at this meet, especially the inexperienced swimmers and divers,” Moats said.
