PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls soccer team peppered the Port Townsend net in a 6-1 victory.
The Roughriders pounded 24 shots on goal compared to eight for the Redhawks.
Emily Boyd opened the contest with goal off of an assist from Taylar Clark in the second minute.
Sierra Robinson then added a header goal off a corner kick from Madison St. George in the 29th minute.
“This was on a corner kick that the smallest player on the field headed in,” Moseley said.
Port Townsend cut the lead to 2-1 with a 34th-minute strike, but Port Angeles’ Maddie Boe scored on a free kick five minutes later.
“Boe took the free kick quickly and caught the PT defense still setting up their wall,” Moseley said.
Kyrsten McGuffey and Mia Del Guzzi scored their first varsity goals for the Riders in the 59th and 77th minutes, respectively.
Boe earned her fifth assist of the season on Del Guzzi’s goal.
Shanzi Cosgrove rounded out the scoring with her fourth goal in two games off a free kick in the final minute.
Moseley named Robinson and McGuffey as his offensive players of the game, Boe as the top transition player, and Saige Hefton earned praise for her work defensively.
Port Angeles (2-0) next plays at Chimacum (0-2) on Thursday.
Volleyball
Black Hills 3, Port Angeles 0
TUMWATER — The Roughriders were swept 25-13, 25-8 and 25-12 in their nonleague season opener by the Wolves.
“With our jamboree being canceled this year, we had to work out our kinks against a very tough team,” Port Angeles coach Christine Halberg said of Thursday’s match.
“The girls played hard, hit the floor for everything and kept their heads high. They know what we need to work on and they’re ready for the challenge.”
Kiana Robideau lead the way for the Riders with five digs, four kills and two blocks.
Emily Johnson added eight assists, five digs and a block, and Brennan Gray totaled two digs and a kill.
Freshman Aeverie Politika served up Port Angeles’ only ace, and Genna Orr, Alyssa Sweet and Nikki Price had one kill apiece.
The Riders (0-1) host Kingston on Tuesday.
Quilcene 3, Neah Bay 0
QUILCENE — Quilcene swept the nonleague matchup with the Red Devils 25-14, 25-11 , 25-17.
“Neah Bay had some excellent servers and back row hitters that really challenged our serve-receive and defense,” Rangers coach Joni Crowell said.
“Alex Johnsen, Megan Weller and Emily Hitt did an excellent job of playing the ball up.
“We were strong at the net with hitting but need a little more work on getting our blocks down.”
Weller was 8 for 10 on serve with four aces. She added three kills, seven digs and two assists.
Johnsen contributed nine digs and served 4 of 5 with one ace at the libero position.
Elysah Schryver served 7 of 10 with an ace, four kils and a dig.
Katie Bailey was a perfect 17 of 17 serving. She tallied three aces, three kills and two digs.
Allison Jones chipped in with 14 assists and served 4 of 5 with two aces.
Emily Hitt had three aces while serving 9 of 10.
“Again [we] displayed a high level of teamwork that can only come with playing together since grade school,” Crowell said.
“Some highlights included an amazing right-side hit by Katie Bailey, as well as some strong hitting from outsides Emily Hitt and Megan Weller.
“My favorite thing about this team is how evenly the stats are spread, with everyone contributing three to four kills each, giving my setter a lot of options.”
Quilcene (2-0) hosts Northwest Yeshiva on Tuesday.
Neah Bay (0-1) hosts Taholah on Wednesday.
Boys Tennis
North Kitsap 7, Port Angeles 0
POULSBO — The Roughriders were outperformed by the Vikings in an Olympic League tennis match.
“As this was the first tennis match of any sort for a good many of [our] players. It was testimony to the fact that serious, focused practice is critical in order to compete against a school with a mature tennis program,” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said.
“The PAHS tennis team consists of a majority of freshmen and sophomores who will be the basis for a strong program in the years to come.”
Janson Pederson was the only Roughrider to win a set during the match. He fell 7-6, 0-6, 6-0 to North Kitsap’s Scott Lyons.
Port Angeles (0-1) visits Olympic (1-1) on Monday.

Girls Swimming
Port Angeles 134, Bremerton 34
BREMERTON — The Roughriders achieved four state-qualifying times in their season opener and outscored the Knights in all 11 events.
Taylor Beebe, Carter Juskevich, Jaine Macias and Erin Edwards swam the 200-yard medley relay in 2 minutes and 59-hundredths of a second to take first at Thursday’s meet and qualify for state.
Juskevich (500 freestyle), Beebe (100 backstroke) and Macias (100 breaststroke) earned individual state-qualifying times. All three took first in those events.
District times
Port Angeles also had 14 district-qualifying times.
Sierra Hunter qualified in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, and Hailey Scott did so in the 50 free and 100 free,
Other individual district qualifiers for the Riders are Juskevich and Sarah Tiemersma in the 200 free, Macias in the 200 individual medley, Lum Fu and Ashlee Seelye in the 50 free, Edwards qualified in the 100 butterfly, and Kylee Reid and Kiara Amundson in the 100 backstroke.
Port Angeles’ 200 free relay (Mekena Merideth, Seelye, Edwards and Scott) and 400 freestyle relay (Juskevich, Edwards, Beebe and Macias) also made district times.
Juskevich (200 free and 500 free) and Macias (200 individual medley and 100 breast) were double event winners.
Port Angeles placed first in all 11 events.
There was no diving at the meet due to Bremerton’s lack of a diving board.
Next up for the Riders is their first home meet of the season Tuesday against Kingston at 3:30 p.m. at William Shore Memorial Pool.
Cross Country
PA’s Long first at Olympic Jamboree
BREMERTON — Gracie Long highlighted a nice showing by the Port Angeles cross country team by taking first in the girls race at the Olympic jamboree at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
Long finished the 1.9-mile race in 11 minutes, 53 seconds, which was a full minute ahead of second-place Holly Rouse of Klahowya.
Port Angeles junior Lael Butler came in third with a time of 13:01.
Five of the top seven placers for the Roughriders’ boys team at Thursday’s jamboree were either freshmen or cross country first-timers.
Freshman Cameron Butler paced Port Angeles with an eighth-place showing (10:36).
Other riders finishing in the top 25 were senior Lukas Mobias (14th), junior Tristin Butler (18th) and freshman Gabe Long (25th).
“The freshmen runners were excited about the higher level of competition at the high school level,” first-year Port Angeles coach Rodger Johnson said.
Riders sophomore Madelyn Dougherty finished first in the girls open race and is already showing improvement from last year by running a 30-second personal record.
Port Angeles opens the regular season Wednesday against North Kitsap and Klahowya at Battle Point Park on Bainbridge Island.
