CHIMACUM — The Port Angeles softball team defeated Chimacum 5-1 in a pitchers’ duel between Nizhoni Wheeler and Ryley Eldridge.
“Both teams had good pitching but were a little sloppy in the field, as both teams had four errors apiece,” Roughriders coach Randy Steinman said.
Wheeler struck out 10 batters and allowed four hits in six innings for Port Angeles.
Eldridge went all seven innings for the Cowboys on Wednesday, holding the Riders to five hits while striking out two and walking five.
“Had some miscues that put PA in better position to score runs, but two missed calls and the score line would have been closer, if not different,” Chimacum coach J.R. Roberts said.
“PA’s sophomore pitcher [Wheeler] had a great game and they ran the bases well.
“We had our chances, but just didn’t convert them.”
Jaidyn Larson went 2 for 3 at the plate and scored a run for Port Angeles, while Wheeler and Emily Johnson each had a hit and walked twice.
Shanya Nisbet was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Cowboys, and Kyah McKinlay had added a pair of hits.
McKinlay also was involved in Chimacum’s play of the game.
In the bottom of the fifth, Port Angeles had a runner on third base and no outs when McKinlay caught a ball hit to dead center field.
“[McKinlay] throws a beautiful ball on a rope to our catcher [Mechelle Nisbet], who blocks home plate and tags out the runner tagging from third,” Roberts said.
“Just like that, a quick double play. And our pitcher [Eldridge] gets the next batter to pop out, and we’re out of trouble just like that.”
The Cowboys head into a long break with a 2-2 record, with all four opponents coming from the Olympic League’s 2A Division.
Chimacum next plays Thursday, April 9, when it opens Olympic League 1A competition against rival Port Townsend (0-1).
Port Angeles (3-0) hosts Klahowya (2-2) today at 4 p.m. and Dry Creek Elementary.

POULSBO — The Wolves took early punches from the Vikings but came out on top in a showdown with the perennial Olympic League power.
“We were kind of Ali versus Foreman, absorbing all kinds of blows in the first 15 minutes,” Wolves coach Dave Brasher said.
“They out-shot us 10-0 in that first 15, but we countered and got the first goal.”
Adrian Espinoza found Liam Harris with a long throw-in, and Harris headed the ball home for a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.
Sequim added another goal when Patrick McCrorie connected with freshman Josiah Urquia.
“Patrick made a good run down the right side and sent a good cross over, and Josiah hit it nicely,” Brasher said.
The Wolves allowed a penalty goal in the 48th minute, but with North Kitsap pressing offensively, Sequim added a free kick near the Vikings goal.
“Eli Berg sent it in and J.T. McElhose got a head on it, and the goalie tipped it off the cross bar and Cameron Chase sniffed it out and put it in,” Brasher said.
“We played last year’s No. 1 and No. 2 teams [Kingston and North Kitsap this week] and got a split out of it, so I’m pleased.”
“We played really well.”
Sequim (2-2-1) visits Port Angeles (3-0) on Saturday at Civic Field.

“Even so, ever-quick Ryan Lester was able to blitz the field in the [girls] 100-meter hurdles with a quality 18.3[-second mark], and teammate Big Jordan Scott was able to do the same on the boys side, winning in 19.1 [in the 110 hurdles].”
