PREP SPORTS: Port Townsend loses rainy game to North Mason; other area reports

PORT TOWNSEND — North Mason earned a rare brand of rout over Port Townsend in Olympic League baseball action.

The Bulldogs managed only one hit, but walked 13 times, stole nine bases and took advantage of five errors to beat the Redskins 11-3 in five innings Tuesday.

Cody Russell struck out 11 in the loss for Port Townsend despite wet and windy conditions at Flint Field.

James Delagarza and Matt Cain each had an RBI for the Redskins.

Port Townsend (0-4, 1-4) hosts Sequim (4-1, 6-1) today.

POULSBO — The Roughriders picked up their first victory of the season while handing the Vikings their first Olympic League loss of the year.

Port Angeles pitcher Jordan Shepherd allowed two runs in the first, but thereafter combined with relievers Travis Paynter and Ryan Mudd to hold North Kitsap to four hits.

The score remained 2-0 until the fifth inning when the Riders plated four runs and then added three more in the sixth.

Larsson Chapman had a two-run single and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly for Port Angeles.

Jace Bohman brought in two runs and Paynter was 2 for 3.

Tuesday’s win kicked off a busy week for Port Angeles (1-2, 1-3).

The Riders are at Klahowya today before hosting rival Sequim on Friday at Civic Field.

Sequim 6, Olympic 5

SEQUIM — The Wolves moved into a first-place tie with the Trojans and North Kitsap thanks to a three-run rally in the sixth inning.

Sequim (4-1, 6-1) grabbed a 3-0 lead with a three-run third inning, but Olympic tied the game with three runs in the fifth and took the lead with two more in the sixth.

The Wolves quickly responded with three scores in their half of the sixth.

Tanner Rhodefer took the mound for the Wolves in the top of the seventh and struck out the side to earn the save.

James Grubb had two hits with a run and an RBI and Rhodefer, Daniel Harker and Nick Johnston each had doubles for Sequim.

Johnston started for the Wolves and struck out six while scattering six hits over five innings.

The Wolves are on the road against Port Townsend today.

SEQUIM — Alex McMenamin earned medalist honors in rough weather as the Wolves remained undefeated in Olympic League play.

“The weather was horrible with the wind blowing the whole match and nonstop rain,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said.

Despite the conditions, the Wolves tied their season-low score of 258.

McMenamin shot a 41 on the par-37 front nine at Cedars at Dungeness on Tuesday.

Brianna Kettel was second overall for the Wolves with a 48, including a birdie on the fourth hole.

Also for Sequim, Cecilee Welch shot a 54, Megan O’Mera had a 56 and Kailee Price finished at 59. Sophomore Sydney Porlier made her first par in a varsity match on the second hole, finishing with a 69.

“I am extremely happy with where the golfers are at right now,” Smithson said.

“As a team we are improving every time out. I am fortunate to have a great group of girls with positive attitudes and the willingness to learn the game.”

The Wolves are on the road today for a match against North Mason at Lakeland Village Golf Course.

Olympic 286, Port Angeles 300

PORT ANGELES — Three Trojans shot in the 50s as Olympic edged the Roughriders at Peninsula Golf Club.

Port Angeles senior Dana Fox took home medalist honors for the third straight time in Olympic League play, posting a 43 despite battling the wind and rain throughout.

A pair of Riders with varsity experience played their first matches of the season. Junior Kate Haworth shot a 63 and sophomore Maddie Boe had a 64.

Also for Port Angeles, Hannah Almaden finished with a 68 and Monica Gasper had a 70.

The Riders travel to Gold Mountain today to face Bremerton.

Boys Golf

Port Angeles 432, Olympic 472

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders shook off the rust from spring break and windy weather to knock off the Trojans in an 18-hole contest at par-72 Peninsula Golf Club.

Alex Atwell shot a 5-over-par 77 with 11 pars and one birdie to earn medalist honors for the third straight match for Port Angeles (3-0).

“I think the course won overall today, but Alex came out on top,” Roughriders coach Mark Mitrovich said.

Micah Needham carded an 86, Mason Jackson an 89, Alex Brown a 90 and Austin Peterson a 92 for Port Angeles.

C.J. Lagat led Olympic with an 87.

The Roughriders visit Bremerton for a match at Gold Mountain Golf Club today.

Boys Soccer

Sequim 3, North Mason 0

BELFAIR — The Wolves blanked the Bulldogs for their third straight win.

Lijah Sanford scored the first goal in the third minute with a header off a corner kick from Brandon Payne.

Hector Baylon gave Sequim a 2-0 lead going into halftime with a 30-yard kick that went over the goalkeeper’s head in the 27th minute.

In the 57th minute, Cameron Chase scored on a cross from Payne.

The Wolves (4-2), who sit in third place in the Olympic League standings, travel to face Olympic (0-6) today.

Port Townsend 10, Olympic 5

PORT TOWNSEND — Max Meier scored five goals to lead the Redskins to a rout over the Trojans.

Meier also set up two goals for Port Townsend.

The Redskins (3-3) are at Olympic League-leading North Kitsap (6-0) tonight.
