PREP SPORTS: Riders soccer triumphs on golden goal

PA beats Bremerton 1-0 in OT

BREMERTON — Port Angeles scored the game-winning goal just before the end of sudden death overtime to leave Bremerton with a 1-0 win and three important Olympic League points.

The Roughriders scored in the game’s 89th minute on a Matthew Miller goal assisted by Grant Butterworth.

“Zak Alton played a long free kick into the box and Butterworth flicked the ball with his head toward goal,” coach Chris Saari said. “Matthew ran onto the ball and got a foot on it to knock it past the Bremerton goalie before colliding with him. As the two players collided, the ball slowly rolled over the goal line into the far post.”

Saari said the game was a physical battle — Bremerton was called for three yellow cards for physical play.

“PA held their own on defense despite absorbing a lot of pressure from Bremerton’s direct style of play,” Saari said.

Junior Goalkeeper Marcus Hogan got his fourth shutout of the season and took a beating from aggressive Bremerton players fouling him multiple times.

“Our defense has come a long way,” Hogan said. “We are now shutting out teams that dominated us in the past.”

Saari said Alton and Landon Close were solid at centerback defensively.

“They did an excellent job winning balls at the back for the Riders,” Saari said. “Eli Fischer was also strong defensively and chipped in offensively with his long throws from both sides of the field.

“Caim Valles came in the game late in the second half for PA and provided a spark in the midfield for the Riders with his energy and passing.”

Port Angeles (4-3-0, 5-3-0) hosts Kingston tonight.

Kingston 3, Sequim 2

KINGSTON — The Wolves fought back from a 2-0 first-half deficit, but couldn’t find the score needed to overtake the Bucs on the road Tuesday.

“Yes, the boys showed fighting spirit coming back from being down 2-0 in the first half and tying it up just before the halftime break,” coach Juan Carlos Cisneros said. “A couple of defending mistakes hurt us, but we got a nice free kick goal from Preston Kurtze and then an own goal from Kingston to tie it up.”

Sequim’s defensive effort wasn’t up to par after halftime.

“We gave them several scoring opportunities. Luckily for us, our goalkeeper Nolan Valenzuela made some great saves to keep us in the game,” Cisneros said. “Unfortunately for us we also gave up an own goal when a ball was put inside the 6-yard box and our defender tried to clear it only to flick off his head into our goal.

“Toward the latter part of the game we had a chance to tie when our forward got played in behind their back line in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper, but he could not quite get a good first touch to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Sequim (1-6-0) hosts North Mason tonight.

East Jefferson 1, Life Christian 1

TACOMA — Playing with just one substitute due to illnesses, the Rivals stood tall to earn a point on the road.

Both goals were scored in the first 10 minutes of the game.

“LC scored first. It was an error by our goalie. He mis-kicked the ball and their striker scored on an empty net,” coach Rob Cantley said.

“We responded when freshman Rene Martin got a pass from Armando Sanchez and had a tight angle but snuck it between the goalie and near post.”

East Jefferson had a shot to take the lead before halftime but the Rivals’ penalty shot was saved.

“We started to tire halfway through the second half and had to play a lot of defense,” Cantley said. “Our goalkeeper Emilio Lopez made some really good saves, their quick forward had some one-on-one opportunities that Lopez saved.”

Life Christian earned a penalty one minute before the end of regulation, but the Rivals came out unscathed.

“They crashed it off the crossbar and Emilio crashed to make the save on the rebound,” Cantley said.

Cantley said freshman Jameson Henery and senior Sean Botkin stood out for their defensive play.

East Jefferson (3-4-1, 3-5-1) hosts Annie Wright tonight.

BREMERTON — The Riders top four all shot in the 40s in a win over the Trojans at Rolling Hills Golf Course.

Edun Bailey was back to earn match medalist honors with a round of 43 on the par-36 course for Port Angeles. Teammates Phoenix Flores (44), Austin Worthington (46) and Cale Wentz (49) all counted toward the Riders’ score.

Port Angeles hosts Bremerton today.

Kingston 162, Sequim 169

SEQUIM — Carter Cronin led the Wolves with a 39 that featured a birdie, three pars and four bogeys in a closely played match with the Buccaneers at The Cedars at Dungeness.

“Despite not feeling totally confident over the ball, he scraped together a solid score,” coach Sean O’Mera said.

Lars Wiker posted a personal-best round of 43, Cole Smithson added a 43 and Zack Thompson shot 44 while playing the entire cold, windswept match in shirt sleeves.

Kingston’s Avery Berger shot a 1-under-35 to earn medalist honors.

Sequim will visit North Mason on April 20.

Girls Golf

Port Angeles 223, Olympic 235

BREMERTON — Piper Williams shot a season-best round of 43 to lift the Roughriders in a close match on what coach Mike DuPuis called “a very soggy Rolling Hills Golf Course.”

“Piper’s round was extremely impressive due to the fact that the course was really wet and it played really long and hard,” DuPuis said. “It helped that she one-putted her last two holes for pars.

Mia Neff had a 58 and was followed by Lauryn Chapman and Claire Osterberg who each shot 61. Kaylee Schonig shot 62 and Malena Marquez had a 67.

Port Angeles (5-0) hosts Bremerton today.
