PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Chimacum girls basketball wins another OT thriller

CHIMACUM — Chimacum held back North Mason 50-47 in overtime for the Cowboys second straight nonleague girls basketball victory.

Chimacum (2-1) previously knocked off Forks 42-36 in OT last Friday.

“It turned into another cardiac kids sort of night for us having to hit a shot with a couple seconds left to make it to overtime after losing a small lead in the fourth quarter,” Cowboys coach Trevor Huntingford said of Monday’s game.

Mechelle Nisbet beat the shot clock and sent the game to overtime with a bucket with 5 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

“Tonight was nice to get a few bodies back in the rotation with the return of the Yaley sisters [Alice and Grace] who came off the bench tonight and gave us some nice depth,” Huntingford said.

“I didn’t think our decision making was always the best tonight, but in the end the girls hit the shot they needed to, including Mechelle Nisbet’s shot-clock beating shot with 5 seconds left on the clock.”

Maddie Dowling led all scorers with 16 points for Chimacum. Mechelle Nisbet added 14 points.

“Maddie Dowling and Mechelle Nisbet were both big hitting from outside and scoring on the drive and from the line,” Huntingford said.

“And Jada Trafton in her second varsity start came up with 10 points.

“I feel like this is big for us moving forward as Shanya Nisbet has always been a steady scorer and the Yaley sisters can score as well, so I think we have six viable scoring threats people will have to contend with this year, which hopefully makes us tough to defend.

“I think our conditioning this year has paid huge dividends in these early games, and we are going to need it this week with four games in five days, but the girls are stepping up to the plate and playing hard and holding together in the biggest moments of the game.”

“We are fortunate to have some outstanding athletes, but we are still learning how to play together as a team.”

SEQUIM — The Loggers nearly completed a fourth-quarter comeback against the Wolves JV, chiseling Sequim’s 20-point lead down to three late in the game.

“[We were] tied halftime, down by six [after three quarters], then Sequim really got a big head of steam in the fourth and got us down 20 at 59-39,” Crescent coach Chris Ferrier said.

“We could have folded the tents and let it get away but the guys kept up the effort and desire and we actually had two chances at a 3-pointer to tie at the end of the game, the ball just wouldn’t drop.”

Ferrier said McCabe Story played an outstanding game in dropping in 21 points.

“Neil Peppard also was fantastic with 16 points and seven rebounds,” Ferrier said.

“Credit to my guys for refusing to quit. We’ve come a long way.”

The Loggers (1-1) will visit the Port Angeles C Squad today.

Tuesday’s boys and girls basketball doubleheader at home against Quilcene was cancelled due to weather.
