PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles came up just shy in a close loss to Kingston in an Olympic League boys tennis match at home Tuesday.
“The guys all made a great effort today but came up short to Kingston 4-3,” Roughriders head coach Gil Stockton said.
“All the matches seem to go to deuce many times and good shots were made by everyone. It was a great day of entertaining tennis.
“Hayden Woods continued his good play and wins the team ball. He is having a terrific season.”
Woods won his No. 2 singles match in straight sets 6-0, 6-3 over Kingston’s Ethan Griffin for his 13th consecutive singles victory this season.
The Riders (9-4, 10-4) wrap up the regular season with a trip to North Mason today.
Port Angeles players will compete in the Olympic League 2A Championships at the Kitsap Tennis and Athletic Center in Bremerton next week.

PORT ANGELES — Sierra Robinson’s hat trick spurred the Roughriders to a dominating win over the Buccaneers.
Tuesday night’s win kept Port Angeles in third place in the Olympic League 2A Division, two points back of second-place North Kitsap.
“Our goal was to start quickly, get some goals and take them out of the game. Once we got going in the middle part of the first half, we took the game over,” said Riders coach Scott Moseley.
Practice makes perfect
Port Angeles broke though 14 minutes in when Robinson took a Delaney Wenzl throw in and placed the ball between the keeper’s legs. Wenzl scored seven minutes later from a planned short corner kick from Emilia Long.
“We’ve worked on those every practice and finally scored one from it. Delaney crushed the shot into the side net,” said Moseley.
Long took over in the next eight minutes to score two goals, her eighth and ninth of the season, and dish out an assist.
Long finished the game with two goals and three assists.
The second half played out much like the first — Port Angeles with possession of the ball and forcing the Kingston goalie to make multiple saves. The Riders outshot the Buccaneers 16 to 6 in the game.
Port Angeles’ other scores came when Kyrsten McGuffey hit a well-placed shot into the side net in the 43rd minute assisted by Cheyenne Wheeler while Robinson recorded her third goal in the 66th minute on Long’s third assist of the game.
Long and Robinson are tied for the team-lead with nine goals for the season with Wenzl just behind with seven, while Long leads the Riders with 10 assists and McGuffey has seven.
“Our offense is very capable of scoring goals but we have some more work defensively if we want to make a run in the postseason,” said Moseley.
Sequim 2, Coupeville 0
COUPEVILLE — Sequim picked up a shutout win in a nonleague game against the Coupeville Wolves.
“[We] played well as it was a chance to work on several tactical aspects of the game,” Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said. “[We] ended the first half with a goal by Jessica Dietzman and assisted by Olivia Hare.”
Claire Henninger, the team’s All-Peninsula MVP goalkeeper in 2016, scored Sequim’s other goal in the second half.
“Oliva Hare stepped into goal to allow Claire to stretch her legs on the field,” Vander Velde said. “It was a rare opportunity for this to happen and as she scored the goal the entire team cheered for her. It was a great display of team unity and excitement.”
Vander Velde said Hare, Gabby Happe, Miranda Williams, Eden Johnson, Jillian Hutchison, Daisy Ryan and Henninger all played well.

Quilcene 3, Evergreen Lutheran 0
QUILCENE — The Rangers moved closer to clinching the SeaTac League’s regular season championship and the No. 1 seed to the league tournament with a three-game sweep of the Eagles.
“Strong play at the net allowed [us] to dominate the Evergreen Eagles throughout the three sets,” Quilcene coach Joni Crowell said.
Senior Emily Hitt totaled eight kills, seven digs, three assists a block and served 16 of 16 with two aces for Quilcene.
Katie Love added 11 kills, 15 digs, a block and three service aces for the Rangers (9-0, 12-0).
McKenzie Kieffer posted eight kills, two digs and a block.
Sophomore setter Allanah Carron handed out 27 assists and had 14 digs, a kill and three service aces.
And Abbygael Weller had 10 digs, six kills and two service aces for the winners.
“[We] made some changes to the serve receive that strengthened all attack options off the serve,” Crowell said. “Each hitter is in position to attack off of the serve receive now, which shows in how well spread out our kills are. Coverage has been tightened up and several blocked attacks were dug up.”
The Rangers host Mount Rainier Lutheran (7-1, 10-1) tonight at 6 p.m.
A win would give Quilcene the No. 1 seed to the league tournament.
