Volleyball Quilcene 3, Forks 0
QUILCENE — The Rangers swept past the Spartans 25-8, 25-12, 25-19 in the first action for both teams.
“The Lady Rangers played well tonight for their season opener,” Quilcene coach Joni Crowell said.
“Getting more play time this year are junior defensive specialist Sydney Brown, sophomores McKenzie Kieffer and Pearl Munn, and freshman Abbygael Weller.
“A strong performance by Weller, especially with an outstanding serve-receive, started out some options that allowed our setter, Allison Jones, to set all her options, giving Emily Hitt and Katie Love the opportunity to swing at the net. Bailey Kieffer served really tough tonight and also played very strong at the net.”
Jones served 11 for 13 with three aces, and also tallied 26 assists and three kills.
Hitt lived up to her name with a team-high 10 kills. She also served 6 for 6 with an ace and added a dig and a block.
Kieffer connected on 22 of 23 serves, with five aces, four kills and a pair of digs.
Katie Bailey added five kills, two digs, a block and went 4 of 5 with two service aces.
Love contributed six kills, two digs and served 6 for 7 with two aces.
Weller’s stat line included five digs, three kills, and two service aces.
Quilcene (1-0) hosts Clallam Bay tonight.
Forks (0-1) will play in the Centerville Tournament in Centralia on Saturday.
In other volleyball action from Tuesday, Chimacum was swept 3-0 by Vashon in a nonleague match.
Girls Soccer Klahowya 4, Port Angeles 0
BREMERTON — The Roughriders opened their season with a tough loss to the Eagles in a nonleague contest at Silverdale Stadium.
Port Angeles coach Scott Moseley said some early first half goals took the air out of a hopeful start and Klahowya went on to score four goals in the first half, including a Port Angeles own goal.
“We were trying a new formation that should’ve stopped them from getting shots in the middle of the field, but it didn’t work out like we planned,” Riders coach Scott Moseley said.
With Port Angeles down 4-0 in the 33rd minute, Moseley switched the Riders back to a traditional 4-4-2 formation which solidified the defense, according to Moseley.
Although Klahowya threatened, their shots in the seconnd half were from 25 yards and out, and the Riders held them scoreless the last 47 minutes.
Port Angeles’ best chances came on a CC Robinson breakaway in the first half which ended with a non-call collision and a second-half break away by freshman Delaney Wenzl, whose shot was saved by the Eagles’ goalkeeper.
Moseley named Robinson the offensive player of the game and goalkeeper Madelyn Wenzl as defensive player of the game. “Mads had a solid game in goal — stopped some tough shots and held on to everything that came her way,” said Moseley.
The Riders finished with two shots, while Klahowya registered 14.
Port Angeles (0-1) hosts Port Townsend at Civic Field at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
