PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls swim team set a new school record in the 200-yard medley relay in a season-opening 124-56 win against Olympic.

Kenzie Johnson, Nadia Cole, Jaine Macias and Felicia Che set the new school-best mark in 1 minute, 54.19 seconds.

The Roughriders also qualified all three relay teams for the state meet and earned 12 district-qualifying times in the meet at William Shore Memorial Pool.

Port Angeles swimmers won eight swimming events and took first place in diving while outscoring the Trojans in all 12 contested events.

The Riders swim at Klahowya on Thursday.

Girls Soccer

SEQUIM — The Wolves put across four goals in the first half to drop the Cowboys in a nonleague match.

Hope Glasser had a hat trick for Sequim, while Jessica Deitzman, Yana Hoesel, Bobbie Sparks and Aylee Bennett also scored goals.

The Wolves totaled 31 shots on goal and made five saves.

“The ladies were able come together as a unit and dominate their opponent,” Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said.

“All were ecstatic to get their first win of the season.”

Volleyball

Quilcene sweeps pair

QUILCENE — The Rangers have yet to drop a game on the young season after sweeping Clallam Bay 25-14, 25-13, 25-16 and opening SeaTac League play with a 25-3, 25-11, 25-11 win against Tacoma Baptist.

Quilcene was without two starters in the match against Tacoma Baptist.

“Pearl Munn and McKenzie Kieffer stepped up with strong play,” Rangers coach Joni Crowell said.

“Tonight we had really strong net play, putting down a team total of nine blocks for the night.

“The first game Katie Love put us out to an early lead with really strong serving.

Outside hitters Love and Emily Hitt continue to dominate for the Rangers, and Bailey [Kieffer] is hitting well on the right side.”

Kieffer served 12 of 14 with five aces, and also had five kills and a block.

“Sydney Brown put in a solid serve receive. Allison Jones set strong the entire night and tipped well at the net for three tip kills.”

Against Clallam Bay, Crowell said sophomore McKenzie Kieffer debuted at the net and put down a block in the second set.

Munn, also a sophomore, put in a strong showing on the right side with several key saves while covering.

Crowell also praised Love and Hitt for their work on the outside.

“Clallam had a strong defense and returned a lot of hits, so some really good rallies stretched out the games,” Crowell said.

“Abbygael Weller continued to prove a consistent serve-receive passer, and Brown added in a few more digs also.

“All in all, [I’m] very pleased with the teamwork the Lady Rangers demonstrated.”

Quilcene (3-0) hosts Auburn Adventist on Tuesday.

Boys Tennis

North Kitsap 6, Port Angeles 1

PORT ANGELES — Tyler Nickerson was the lone Roughrider to come out on top in a match against the defending Olympic League champions.

“The beauty of tennis is that the guys will improve by playing those with better skill sets,” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said.

“There was noticeable improvement from last Tuesday’s play.”

Nickerson earned the team ball for his efforts in his No. 3 singles match.

“Tyler’s play has vastly improved over last year,” Stockton said.

The Riders (1-1) host Olympic today at 4 p.m.

Cross Country Olympic League Jamboree

BREMERTON — Port Angeles’ Gracie Long won the girls race to pace a strong showing by the Roughriders at the Olympic League Jamboree at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

Coach Cheryl Girard was proud of the way her runners packed up, pushing and pulling each other through the course.

Long finished the 1.9-mile race in 11 minutes, 46 seconds, an improvement of 10 seconds from 2015.

Freshman Ella Holland finished third with a mark of 12:18 for Port Angeles, while Madelyn Dougherty was fourth (12:35).

Cameron Butler led the Port Angeles boys with a fourth-place finish in 10:02.

Tristin Butler finished fifth with a time of 10:27.

“It was a fun day, a fun race,” Tristin Butler said.

“It was good to see runners from the other schools and what our competition looks like.”

The Riders host the Salt Creek Invitational at Salt Creek County Park on Saturday.
