PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles softball keeps things rolling

KINGSTON — Strong pitching and power hitting led the way for Port Angeles softball in a two-hit, 10-0 shutout of Kingston in five innings.

“Callie [Hall] and Hope [O’Connor] shut down the Kingston batters, and our defense played errorless ball which included an awesome 6-4-3 double play from [Taylar] Clark to [Natalie] Steinman to [Kylee] Reid,” Roughriders coach Randy Steinman said of Friday’s game.

Steinman knocks it deep

“Natalie Steinman hit a towering home run over the 222-feet sign in straightaway center field.”

Port Angeles (11-0, 14-1) visits White River (13-1), leaders of the South Puget Sound League’s Mountain Division and a potential district opponent, on Monday.

Quilcene 10, Klahowya 1

QUILCENE — Powered by Erin Macedo’s three-run homer and Bailey Kieffer’s RBI double the Rangers used a five-run third inning to take down the Class 1A Eagles.

Allison Jones went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, Alexis Gray was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Quilcene leadoff hitter Madison Coffey had two hits and scored three runs.

“Eight players in the hit column is a great formula for winning,” Rangers coach Mark Thompson said.

Pitching and defense were also solid for the Rangers on Friday. Bailey Kieffer scattered seven hits, striking out 11 while only giving up one earned run.

Kieffer’s only allowed five earned runs on the season.

“Bailey pitched better as the game went on,” Thompson said.

Two of the hits were to reigning Olympic League 1A MVP Amber Bumbalough, who had the only RBI for Klahowya; an RBI triple in the third inning.

“She is a great player on a pretty talented roster [and] definitely a tough out,” Thompson said.

Bumbalough pitched the final two innings for the Eagles, but Quilcene got to her for three runs in the sixth, off of three hits including RBI singles from Jones and Abby Weller.

The first-place Rangers (6-0, 11-1) visit Rainier Christian (5-1, 5-2) on Tuesday in what Thompson described as “a huge game for us.”

Quilcene can clinch both the SeaTac League title and a Class 1B state tournament berth with a victory.

Boys Soccer Bremerton tops Sequim

KINGSTON — The Wolves showed some nerves in the shootout portion of their Olympic League playoff tiebreaker against the Knights, falling 3-0 on penalty kicks Thursday at Kingston High School.

“It was our first soiree in the penalty kick shootout this season and I think we were a little nervous,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said. “Bremerton had been in a few shootouts this year, and they were composed and they made their first three kicks and we missed our first three.”

The Wolves missed out on a district playoff berth in the loss, a tiebreaker featuring two 20 minute halves plus two five-minute overtime periods.

After a half-hour lightning delay, Sequim warmed up in the Kingston gym and Brasher said his team was excited to play.

The Wolves scored quickly when senior Konnor Parrish scored via an assist from Liam Harris in the ninth minute.

But the Knights evened the score just before the end of the first 20-minute half, scoring off of a long throw-in when Sequim failed to clear the ball out of the goal area.

Brasher said the Wolves controlled the second half but couldn’t find the winning goal.

“The second half was all us,” Brasher said. “But Liam hit the crossbar, Josiah [Urquiah] got kind of dinged, took an elbow to the side of the head, so he left the game and we couldn’t get a goal.”

The overtime periods couldn’t produce a goal, but the Knights were successful in the shootout.

“We had a great year and there were lots of positives,” Brasher said.

“One of our seniors got the last goal, Patrick McCrorie played great in defense. “The team [returning] is still pretty young, defense is real young, all sophomores were starting except for Patrick, so we have a lot to look forward to.

“We had a great group of kids and they battled every game.”

Sequim wrapped the season with an overall record of 7-8-2.

Hoquiam 2, Forks 0

HOQUIAM — Forks wrapped up its most successful season in years, losing 2-0 on a muddy field in Hoquiam.

The Spartans, after winning just one game the past two seasons, improved to 5-9 this year (3-5 in the Evergreen 1A League).

“(5-9), I’ll take it after two straight years of 1-15,” said coach Joe Morton.

After being seemingly out of the playoff hunt after a loss to Montesano last week, the Spartans came tantalizingly close to the postseason at the very end. Montesano, which finished in third place in the league at 5-3, was expected to easily beat winless and last-place Tenino Thursday. However, surprisingly, the Bulldogs were only able to beat Tenino 1-0. Forks, meanwhile, was tied at the half to Hoquiam, but the Spartans center back Miguel Ramirez had to leave the game in the second half because he was throwing up and Hoquiam was able to break through for a pair of second-half goals. A goal her and a goal there on Thursday and Forks could’ve ended up at 4-4, tied with Montesano for third in the league and in a postseason situation.

“They played great right to the end,” Morton said.

Morton said goalie Gabriel Terrones made five or six goal-stopping saves.

Morton made three freshmen — Oscar Gonzalez, Hugo Sandoval and Terrones — his co-captains for the match.

“They’ll be our leaders next year,” Morton said.

The Spartans graduate seniors Ivan Torres, Saul Avila, Alex Martinez, Oscar Avila, Daniel Cruz, Danny Martinez and Seth Miles.

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders earned a senior night win over the Bulldogs in an Olympic League match.

[We] celebrated seniors Claire Fritschler, Audrey Little, and Emily Traughber, who have all been part of the tennis team for four years,” Port Angeles coach Stephanie Gochnour said. “They represented our team with poise, kindness and a love for the game.”

Gochnour named No. 2 doubles duo Saige Hefton and Hanna Brown as her players of the match for their 6-4, 6-3 win.

The Riders will play the Olympic League Championship in Bremerton on Wednesday.
