PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Angeles softball posts one-hit shutout of Bremerton

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles pitchers Nizhoni Wheeler and Callie Hall combined on a one-hit shutout in a 12-0 softball victory over Bremerton.

“[We] got great pitching, hitting and played errorless defense in the rainy weather,” Roughriders coach Randy Steinman said of the team’s Olympic League 2A Division opener.

“It was a team effort from start to finish.”

Wheeler notched three strikeouts, walked none and allowed no hits in two innings in the pitcher’s circle.

Hall allowed one hit in three innings and struck out two batters.

At the plate

Sierra Robinson was 3 for 3 with two stolen bases and two runs for Port Angeles, while Kylee Reid also went 3 for 3 while driving in two runs and scoring twice.

Erin Edwards doubled home a run and later scored and Nikaila Price went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run.

The Riders (1-0, 2-1) visited Olympic late Thursday and will play at rival Sequim on Wednesday.

SEQUIM — Adrienne Haggerty, Bobbi Sparks and Isabelle Dennis all totaled two hits to lead the Wolves to an Olympic League 2A Division-opening win over the Bulldogs.

Pitchers Dennis and Shelby Jones combined to allow two hits while striking out eight for Sequim, with Dennis picking up the win.

The Wolves (1-0, 2-2) visit North Kitsap (0-0) today and trek to Everett for a nonleague game against Archbishop Murphy on Saturday.

Baseball Sequim 10, North Mason 5

SEQUIM — The Wolves took advantage of 11 errors by the Bulldogs to win their Olympic League 2A Division opener and remain unbeaten on the season.

Gavin Velarde scattered seven hits across his five innings of work on the mound, allowing one run and striking out seven to earn the win for Sequim (1-0, 3-0).

James Grubb led the way at the plate for the Wolves, going 2 for 4 with two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base.

Grubb also closed out the game on the mound, giving up an unearned run but allowing no hits in an inning of work.

Jared Thomas reached base three times for Sequim, amassing two hits and a walk and scoring a run.

The Wolves visit North Kitsap (1-0, 1-0) today.
