Boys Basketball Forks 69, Tumwater 58

TUMWATER — The Spartans closed out a close game with a huge fourth quarter to blow defeat Class 2A Tumwater on the road.

Forks trailed 49-45 entering the final frame, but erupted for a 24-point fourth to pull away. Braton Armas scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth to aid Forks’ cause.

“It was awesome to see. We went into the fourth down four and win by 11,” said coach Rick Gooding.

Gooding said the team came together after starter Seth Johnson got in foul trouble in the fourth. “They played really well together. It was great to see,” he said.

The Spartans shot well from outside all night, especially Cort Prose, who led the team with 18 points. “Prose stretched the defense. Armas scored eight in the fourth inside because they were worried about 3-pointers,” Gooding said.

“We stayed true to who we are and good things happened,” Gooding said.

Johnson added 17 points despite his foul trouble.

The Spartans (4-2) will host Chimacum on Tuesday before playing Class 4A Auburn Mountainview, coached by Port Angeles alum Matt Sinnes, in the opening game of the Port Angeles Holiday Tournament on Friday.

Gooding said these tough games will prepare Forks for their Evergreen 1A season, which unlike other leagues, doesn’t begin until January.

“We want to make a big push and test ourselves and play some tough opponents. We want to have to figure things out in the fourth quarter,” he said.
