PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Townsend boys cross country races to win

PORT TOWNSEND — Junior Nathan Cantrell and senior Gabe Petrick finished first and second individually to lead the Port Townsend boys cross country team to a win over Class 2A North Kitsap and North Mason in a two-mile race at Port Townsend Golf Club.

Cantrell edged Petrick by five seconds, winning the race with a time of 10 minutes, 31 seconds.

The Redhawks had two other runners in the top six as Seamus Fraser finished fifth with a time of 11:05 and Kincaid Gould was sixth (11:07) as Port Townsend posted 31 points to edge North Kitsap (37) and North Mason (58) for the team meet win.

In the girls race, junior Rachel Matthes posted a strong second-place finish in 13:01, 14 seconds behind North Kitsap sophomore Madison Zosa. Matthes is a Chimacum student who competes on the Redhawks cross country team because the Cowboys do not offer cross country.

Zosa won the Olympic League meet, the West Central District meet and was fifth at the 2A state meet as a freshman last year.

Port Townsend’s Anika Avelino was fifth for the Redhawks with a time of 14:27. Gina Brown was 13th (16:22) and Erin Fenton 18th (18:40) for Port Townsend, which didn’t have enough runners to field a full team.

North Kitsap won the girls team event with 21 points, while North Mason totaled 40.

PA/Sequim compete

SILVERDALE — Sequim’s Murray Bingham won the boys race and Port Angeles’ Lauren Larson was second in the girls 5-kilometer contest at a three-team meet at Klahowya Secondary School on Wednesday.

The host Eagles won both the boys and girls team events, with the Roughriders’ boys and girls second and the Wolves third.

Bingham won by 17 seconds, finishing with a time of 16 minutes, 55 seconds.

Port Angeles’ Thomas Shaw and Gabriel Long finished fourth and fifth in 17:42 and 17:49, respectively.

“A good race over varied terrain with lots of pack running from the Roughriders,” Port Angeles boys and girls cross country coaches Rodger Johnson and Cheryl Girardi wrote in an email. “We are excited for the rest of the regular season — the team is looking good.”

Sequim’s Liam Byrne placed eighth with a time of 17:53 and the Wolves Alec Shingleton was 14th (18:20).

Sophomore Adam Borde and senior Cameron Butler were ninth and 10th for the Riders in 18:10 and 18:11, respectively.

“It was a challenge to run with a pack, but it made me pace myself and I ended up with a good time in the end,” Borde said.

In the girls race, Larson finished 16 seconds behind Klahowya’s Rachel Newhard in 19:47.

Sequim freshman Riley Pyeatt was third (20:21).

Kynzie Deleon was the next-highest North Olympic Peninsula runner, placing fifth for Port Angeles (21:05). Ella Holland ended up seventh (22:11) and Kathryn Guttormsen finished ninth for the Riders (22:13).

Other Port Angeles runners in the top 20 included Jenna McGoff (12th in 23:00); Jada Cargo-Acosta (14th in 23:22); Katie Cobb (15th in 23:39); Alisandra Baccus (16th in 23:40) and Emma Weaver (19th in 24:07).

“Everyone on the team stuck in packs, and worked with their teammates to beat the other teams and competitors, Baccus said.

Sequim’s Eleanor Byrne (18th in 23:57) posted the Wolves’ second-best time.

The Port Angeles boys and girls will compete at the Bellevue Invitational at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Sequim will compete at the Three Course Challenge at Camp Rilea, Ore. on Saturday.

“Despite this being our third match in three days, we got off to a great start and kept it up throughout the match,” Gundersen said.

The Riders (5-2) visit Chimacum on Monday.
