PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Port Townsend girls hoops rallies for win; Port Angeles wrestlers win North Mason Classic

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Townsend posted 26 fourth-quarter points to force overtime and eventually triumph over Wahluke 60-55 in overtime in the girls opener at the Redhawks’ annual Crush in the Slush basketball tournament Thursday.

Kaitlyn Meek and Jazmine Apker-Montoya keyed the comeback for Port Townsend.

Meek scored 12 of her game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Apker-Montoya notched 13 of her 22 points in the final frame and the extra period.

“Most of the comeback, offensively, was thanks to Jazmine hitting 3s,” Redhawks coach Scott Wilson said.

“She hit three 3s in the fourth quarter and overtime. Her outside shooting was really what got us back in the game. Kaitlyn is always a monster defensively. So, those two together really caught fire.”

Wilson said his team upped the tempo on both sides of the floor during the rally.

“We picked up the pace offensively and that helped us score layups inside and Jazmine was open on the outside,” Wilson said.

“Defensively, we stopped fouling and really did a good job of closing out on their post players.”

Wilson is in his second year of coaching the Redhawks’ varsity, and third year with the program. He hasn’t seen anything approaching a 26-point quarter.

“We’ve never come closing to scoring 26 points in a quarter in my time as coach,” Wilson said. “That was impressive.”

Wilson also singled out the play of post Jenna Carson. Carson finished with eight points.

“She has stuggled to score in her last couple games, but really came through with inside moves and scores down low,” Wilson said. “And Jenna always is the Rock of Gibraltar on defense.

“Wahluke was getting inside of our defense pretty consistently until later in the fourth quarter and Jenna and Izzy Hammett stepped up and clogged up the middle.”

Wrestling

Riders win title

BELFAIR — Port Angeles placed five wrestlers in the finals and won three individual championships to pin down a team title at the North Mason Classic.

The Roughriders rolled to 240 points, ahead of Sequim (188) and North Mason (186.5).

“A pretty good day for us,” Port Angeles coach Brent Wasche said.

Three Riders’ seniors wrestled their way to titles.

Cody Anderson won the 120-pound class, Ben Basden was tops at 138 and Caleb Joslin claimed the 160-pound title.

“Ben Basden was named the outstanding wrestler for the tournament,” Wasche said.

“He dominated his whole way through.”

Joslin picked up his first tournament championship.

“He’s one of our senior captains along with Ben,” Wasche said. “He was very technical the whole time, avoided trouble and controlled his matches.”

Port Angeles’ other finalists included Tyler Messinger at 113 and Bryce Lauderback at 195.

“Bryce wrestled at one of the hardest weight classes in the tournament,” Wasche said. “He lost in the finals by five to a state placer from last year.”

Thomas Blevins (170) and Dan Basden (106) turned in third-place finishes for the Riders.

“Dan had one of the toughest performances of the day,” Wasche said.

“His second match he was disqualified on blood time and he had to wear a face shield the rest of the day and just rolled through his matches.”

Port Angeles’ girls varsity also wrestled and Alyssa Sweet (130) was second and Sam Rueda (115) third for the Riders.

Port Angeles will visit North Mason for an Olympic League dual Thursday.
