QUILCENE — Quilcene continued its unbeaten start to the season by sweeping its Class 1A neighbor to the north, Chimacum 25-13, 25-12, 25-16 in a nonleague volleyball match.

“That’s pretty fun [to beat an area rival],” Rangers coach Joni Crowell said.

“My cousin [Cailey Snyder] is their assistant coach.

“They gave us some good competition, we had some good rallies and they were scrappy.”

Quilcene served well in the game, led by a perfect 24 of 24 performance, including four aces by senior Katie Bailey. Bailey also added five digs.

Bailey Kieffer also fared solidly from the service line, connecting on 12 of 13 attempts with six aces for the Rangers (4-0, 7-0). Kieffer also led the team in kills with nine and had a block.

Junior Emily Hitt added eight kills and five digs for Quilcene despite playing with an injured shoulder. Sydney Brown served in place of Hitt and connected on 7 of 7 attempts with an ace.

Allison Jones contributed 14 assists and served 7 of 8 with an ace.

Abbygael Weller notched 11 digs and a block and freshman classmate Maddie Coffey had three blocks, a dig and a kill.

“It’s been a fun season so far,” Crowell said.

“We need to work on our covering a little bit more, defensively.

“Katie Love went out with an ankle injury, so we’ve been working on the hitting with the younger kids, and they’ve been coming along really fast. I am expecting them to keep up that improvement.”

The Rangers will visit a new Sea-Tac League foe, the Pope John Paul II Eagles in Lacey on Thursday.

Chimacum (0-1, 3-4) will host Forks in a nonleague contest Monday.

Crescent 3, Sequim JV 2

JOYCE — The Loggers squeezed past the Wolves JV 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 14-25, 15-5 for a nonleague victory.

“My players did very well, especially Ashara Dodson, it was her first game of the season,” Crescent coach Nora Williams said.

Dodson connected on 88 percent of her serves, and had seven kills, 11 blocks, three tips.

Grace Baillargeon hit on 94 percent of her serves and had nine digs.

Caroline Belford added eight digs and served 87 percent.

Alyssa Hutto had 12 assists and hit on 100 percent of her serves.

McKenzie Brannan served 83 percent and Hannah Lee hit 88 percent of her serves.

The Loggers host Clallam Bay on Thursday.

Boys Tennis Port Angeles 7, Chimacum 0

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders swept the Cowboys in a nonleague match.

“All the guys had good, solid shots and things just went our way over a young Cowboy team,” Port Angeles coach Gil Stockton said.

“The guys all had a chance to see how they once played and to see how much they’ve grown playing this terrific game.”

Stockton said team balls went to Bryan Wyall and Brady Nickerson for earning their first varsity match victories with their partners Hudson Soelter and Kale Mayhew.
