PORT ANGELES — North Mason plated one run in the top of the first inning and that lone run held up as Port Angeles lost an Olympic League 2A Division pitchers’ duel to the Bulldogs, 1-0 at Volunteer Field.
“Today was a tough game for us offensively,” Roughriders coach Karl Myers said.
“You can’t ask for a better pitching performance from Ethan [Flodstrom] and Brody [Merritt]. They did enough for us to win, holding them to one run on two hits over seven innings of work [and] striking out 9.
“These two freshman continue to pound the strike zone and get the job done for us on the mound.”
Port Angeles managed six hits, but couldn’t manufacture a run against North Mason’s Troy McCormick.
“This is one of those games where you just have to tip your cap to their guy,” Myers said.
“He hit spots all game long with two pitches and he made it very difficult for us to get anything going offensively. He threw a very good game. Our kids never gave up, and that’s something that this group can hang their hat on, they keep fighting and I’m proud of them for that.”
The Riders (2-1, 3-2) enter spring break in a four-way tie for first place in league play.
Port Angeles’ home game against Bainbridge on Saturday was postponed due to rain.
The Riders host Bremerton on Monday, April 10.

SEQUIM — The Wolves’ busy week ended with Sequim’s fourth loss in as many games, this one a 10-inning defeat at the hands of the Buccaneers.
The defeat spoiled a great game at the plate and on the mound by the Wolves’ Justin Porter.
With Sequim trailing 5-0 after two innings, Porter relieved starter James Grubb, and went seven strong innings to keep the Wolves in the game. Porter allowed one run on five hits and three walks and struck out six.
He also went 4 for 5 at the plate with two runs.
Sequim tied the game with four runs in the sixth and seventh innings, but freshman pitcher Silas Thomas allowed a run on two walks and a base hit in the top of the 10th.
The Wolves (2-3, 4-4) head to spring break in fifth place in the Olympic League 2A Division.
Sequim will host Bainbridge in a nonleague contest Tuesday, April 11.

PORT ANGELES — Natalie Steinman socked two home runs, including a grand slam, as the Roughriders picked up their fourth consecutive Olympic League 2A Division shutout in a five-inning win against the Bulldogs.
“[We] played another solid game and got a lot of production out of the top of the lineup which accounted for seven of the 10 hits,” Port Angeles coach Randy Steinman said.
“Natalie’s grand slam in the third inning put the game away.”
Sierra Robinson notched two hits, three stolen bases and scored three runs for the Riders.
Lauren Lunt went 3 for 3 with a double, three runs and two RBIs.
Callie Hall picked up the win, scattering three hits while striking out four and walking none.
Entering spring break, Port Angeles (4-0, 5-1) is two games clear of second-place Sequim in the Olympic League 2A Division standings.
The Riders host North Kitsap on Wednesday, April 12.

BELFAIR — The Port Angeles soccer team got their third straight Olympic League 2A Division shutout in a 3-0 win over North Mason, staying within one game of first-place North Kitsap.
The Roughriders (5-2, 4-1) have only given up three goals in their past six games this season, outscoring their opponents 17-3 in that span (with one 1-0 loss in overtime). It was the third straight shutout for goalie Lorenzo DeLaTorre and his teammates.
The Riders got a goal from Ben Schneider in the fourth minute on a header on a corner kick from Michael Scott. It was Schneider’s third goal in his past two games.
Andrew St. George (12th minute) scored with an assist from Stuart Methner. The game remained tight until the final minutes, when Kenny Soule scored in the 71st minute to ice the contest, with the assist going to Schneider.
“The Riders got some early goals to take control of a key game on the road before spring break at North Mason. Some quality passing in the first half for PA resulted in a couple goals and a lot of chances,” said coach Chris Saari.
Saari said the Riders gave up some soft goals in its season opener to Franklin Pierce, but that the team’s defense has been solid.
“Ever since then, we’ve clamped it down. Our back four are really settling in. We’re eliminating quality chances,” Saari said.
Saari named Andrew Borde and Hollund Bailey his defensive players of the match, Schneider his offensive player and St. George and Soule his best transition players.
Port Angeles next plays at 12:45 p.m. Saturday against a team visiting all the way from Ketchikan, Alaska.
Kingston 3, Sequim 0
KINGSTON — Playing without their leading scorer Liam Harris who is out with a thigh bruise, the Wolves gave second-place Kingston a hard time in the second half, but weren’t able to break through for a goal in a 3-0 loss.
“I think we played one of our most solid games all year. It seemed closer than 3-0,” said coach Dave Brasher.
In addition to Harris, who was injured last week in a collision in a game versus Port Angeles, Sequim was missing defender Brandon Benson, who was out sick and injured keeper Navy Thomas-Brenske, who splits time with Nick Janikic.
The Wolves were outshot 9-1 in the first half as Kingston controlled the action and took a 2-0 lead into the break.
But, Sequim responded in the second half, outshooting the Buccaneers 6-3 and getting a couple of good chances, one on a corner by Evan James. Kingston scored its third goal in the final minute of the game as the Wolves had everyone up in the offensive zone.
Brasher said that Chris Morgan had his best game of the year and that Janikic had six saves “and played pretty darn well.”
Sequim (3-3-1, 2-3) just has a friendly match this week, against Ketchikan, Alaska, at 5 p.m. Thursday.
