BELFAIR — Sequim’s Liam Harris tied the school’s all-time career goal-scoring record and teammate Liam Stevenson recorded the shutout in goal as the Wolves beat North Mason 4-0 in an Olympic League 2A Division boys soccer match.
Harris scored his 40th career goal to match Kai Antrim in the school record books, finding the net in the 71st minute.
“Addie Berg slotted it to him about 22 yards out and he turned and ripped a curling right footer,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said of Tuesday’s match.
“It was our last goal of the game and it was a beauty.”
Before Harris’ record-tying strike, Stevenson sparked the Wolves with some quality saves in the opening minutes.
“We started a little sketchy,” Brasher said.
“North Mason has a freshman, Domingo Pedro-Gaspar, and he’s a little kid but he’s quick and right away he got put through and was one-on-one with Liam and Liam made a nice diving save to his left. Then he got a flick on and Liam made another nice save and we settled down and controlled things from there.”
Brasher said his team was patient offensively in the first half as North Mason goalkeeper Dylan Abad kept the Wolves at bay.
“He’s solid and had about five real nice saves,” Brasher said.
Sequim broke through and scored two goals in two minutes just before halftime.
In the 34th minute Harris fed Adrian Funston in the corner, Funston dribbled to the end line and cut the ball back to Hayuk Minano, who tucked the ball away.
Two minutes later, Minano headed on a long free kick by Chris Morgan and Ryan Tolberd ran on to the ball and sent it in low and to the right.
Sequim scored off of a corner kick in the 49th minute. Minano sent in the corner and Mike McAleer headed the ball in.
“That was another quality goal,” Brasher said.
Brasher named Stevenson as his man of the match for his key saves.
Sequim (6-2-0, 7-3-2) sits in third place in the Olympic League 2A Division standings with 18 points.
The Wolves face first-place North Kitsap (7-2-0, 8-3-0, 21 points) at home Friday.
Port Angeles 5, Bremerton 0
BREMERTON — The Roughriders scored early and often in a crucial Olympic League 2A Division win.
“Ben Schneider penetrated the right wing and hit a driven cross to the far post where Andrew Methner slid in and one-touched the ball past the Bremerton goalkeeper in the first minute,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.
Schneider, the Riders’ leading scorer, was happy to play a role in Methner’s goal.
“It was great for the team to get off to such a quick start scoring 30 seconds into the game,” Schneider said. “Scoring is nice, but I also like creating opportunities for my teammates and Andrew Methner did a great job of finishing the first goal.”
Port Angeles made it 2-0 in the 5th minute when Kenny Soule made a diagonal run from the wing and took a pass from Andrew St. George before slipping it past the goalkeeper.
Saari said Bremerton switched formations after allowing the second score, adding a forward for more offense.
“The move changed the flow of the game a little and put [the Riders] in their own defensive end,” Saari said.
“Toward the end of the first half [we] counterattacked on a through ball from Andrew St. George that caromed off a Bremerton defender before slipping Ben Schneider through on a one-on-one with the goalie. Ben placed his shot to the side and [we] went into the half up 3-0.”
Schneider added his second goal in the 47th minute off of an assist by Stuart Methner and Methner also assisted on St. George’s goal in the 73rd minute, a long-range driven ball from 25 yards out.
“Gabe Long had a solid game at centerback for [us] winning a lot of balls out of the air and distributing the ball well,” Saari said. “Lorenzo DeLaTorre got his sixth shutout of the season in goal for the Riders.
The win puts distance between fourth-place Port Angeles (5-3-0, 8-3-1, 16 points) and fifth-place Bremerton (3-6-0, 4-8-0, 8 points) in the Olympic League 2A playoff chase.
The Riders host last-place Olympic on Friday.
