SEQUIM — Sequim plated the game’s lone run in the first inning to beat North Mason 1-0 in an important Olympic League baseball contest.
The Wolves (9-6, 11-7) are in a three-way tie with Klahowya (9-6) and Olympic (9-6) for second place, with North Mason (8-6) and Bremerton (8-6) just behind them in the race for four playoff spots.
Nigel Christian tallied nine strikeouts in picking up the win in his 5 2/3 innings on the mound for Sequim.
Nick Johnston earned a save for the Wolves, striking out four batters and not allowing a hit or a walk in the final 1 1/3 innings.
Brett Wright scored Sequim’s only run and Dusty Bates had two of the Wolves’ four hits.
Sequim hosts Bremerton for an important game Monday.
The Wolves went 2-0 against Olympic this season and split their season series with Klahowya and North Mason, but lost to Bremerton in their earlier meeting this season.

KINGSTON — The Roughriders pulled away from the Buccaneers late in the game with a three-run sixth inning and a six-run seventh.
Sophomore Travis Paynter pitched six solid innings for Port Angeles on Friday, scattering six hits and throwing only 57 pitches.
His low pitch total was crucial after he threw three innings two days earlier in the Riders’ 14-inning loss to Olympic League-leading North Kitsap on Wednesday.
“He’s becoming really effective,” Port Angeles coach Vic Reykdal said of Paynter.
“He’s pitching as a junior or senior would this year, not a sophomore.”
Jordan Shepherd and Larsson Chapman both went 3 for 5 at the plate for the Riders.
Shepherd had two doubles and drove in three runs and Chapman doubled and had two RBIs.
“Chapman kind of broke out for us,” Reykdal said.
Logan Ciaciuch doubled, drove in three runs and score three runs for Port Angeles.
The win capped off an impressive week for the Riders, who previously beat Sequim on Monday and battled North Kitsap for 14 innings Wednesday.
Port Angeles (6-8, 6-9) is out of playoff contention, but will look to have an impact on postseason this week.
Following a road game against Port Townsend (1-14, 3-14) on Monday, the Riders travel to Belfair to face North Mason to finish out the season Wednesday.
The Bulldogs are part of a cluster of five teams with 9-6 or 8-6 records vying for the league’s four playoff bids behind North Kitsap.
“We could play spoiler,” Reykdal said.

CHIMACUM — Myles Hundley scored in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cowboys won their second straight game after going winless in their first 13.
“That’s a winning streak,” Chimacum coach Jim Dunn said.
Hundley scored the game-winning from second base on what Dunn said was a “goofy deal.”
With one out and Chimacum runners on first and second, the Warriors tried to turn a double play and send the game to extra innings.
Dunn waved Hundley around and a bad throw to first base prevented Seattle Christian from getting the third out.
“Definitely a different way to win, but I’ll take it,” Dunn said.
“We’ve played better the last two weeks. The difference is our pitching.”
The Cowboys had a strong pitching from Alex Morris, who threw a complete game, scattering six hits, striking out six and walking one.
Morris only recently began pitching after spending most of the last two seasons playing catcher.
“It seems to be working out,” Dunn said of Morris’ position switch.
At the plate for Chimacum, Tracyn Anderson was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Hundley was 2 for 3 with two runs.

KINGSTON — The Buccaneers snapped the Roughriders’ 12-game winning streak, limiting Port Angeles to just four hits in the shutout.
“[We] had opportunities early in the game to put runs on the board but couldn’t get the hits when [we] needed them,” Riders coach Randy Steinman said.
“Kingston, on the other hand, scored five runs after two two-out errors.”
With the loss, the first league loss of the season for Olympic league-leading Port Angeles, the possibility grows that Thursday’s matchup with Sequim will end up deciding the league title.
The Riders (12-1, 12-3) hold a one-game lead over Sequim (11-2, 13-3) in the standings and currently hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, having shut out Sequim 5-0 last Monday.
Against Kingston, Port Angeles pitcher Sarah Steinman threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and striking out five.
Nizhoni Wheeler came on in relief and threw 1 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and an intentional walk.
The Riders got hits from Haley Gray, Alyssa Wetzler, Steinman and Tori Kuch.
Port Angeles visits Port Townsend on Monday.

Halle Palmer managed sacrifice bunts to account for Forks’ runs in each game.
Emily Klahn singled twice in the game one loss, and Courtnie Paul had three total stolen bases and a run in the two games.
Forks visits Rainier for a doubleheader Thursday.

CHIMACUM — The Riders picked up wins from their No. 1 and No. 3 singles players and No. 2 and 3 doubles players to beat Chimacum/Port Townsend.
Port Angeles’ Callie Peet took the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-1 against Frances Sheldon O-Neal.
Chimacum-Port Townsend’s Olivia Baird dropped Audra Perrizo 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles match.
The Riders’ No. 3 singles player Lydia Cornelson beat Casi Rowland 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles play, Chimacum-Port Townsend’s Hannah Little and McKenna Thompson won 6-2, 6-3 over Port Angeles’ Sarah Allen and Rachel Maki.
The Riders’ No. 2 doubles team of Audrey Little and Khaya Elliott claimed a straight-set 6-1, 6-3 win over Vy Nguyen and Sarah McEdwards.
In the No. 3 doubles match, Port Angeles’ Emily Basden and Carter Juskevich beat Ann Nguyen and Alyssa Wolfe 6-3, 1-6, 11-9.
Chimacum-Port Townsend’s Maria Soule and Maddy Woods outlasted the Riders’ Sophia Thurston and Shanya Nisbet 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
Port Angeles travels to North Mason on Monday and Chimacum-Port Townsend visits Kingston.

BREMERTON — The Redskins offense warmed up to defeat the Trojans on a hot day at Silverdale Stadium.
With temperatures reaching 85 degrees in Bremerton on Thursday, Port Townsend scored quickly, with Max Meier finding Patrick Charlton for a goal just 90 seconds after kickoff.
Charlton finished up the first half finding himself deep inside the Trojans’ box on the receiving end of a Beshir Little pass.
Charlton was spun 360-degrees by Olympic defenders before slamming the kick home for his second goal of the night.
“The Trojans mounted numerous offensive attempts but were repelled by strong Port Townsend defense lead by goalkeeper Forrest Piatt, central defender Shilo Lamphear-Ramirez, Cooper Lee, Ian Hadden and Colin Coker,” Port Townsend coach Steve Shively said.
“Plagued all season by surrendering penalty kicks or free-kicks deep in [own] territory, the tough Port Townsend defense recorded their first clean-sheet of the season.”
Meier scored in the 46th minute and assisted on a goal by Little in the 57th minute.
Freshman Jack Kingsley scored his first varsity goal off an assist from Daniel Charlton in the 64th minute to round out the scoring for the Redskins.
With the win, Port Townsend will finish no worse than seventh in the Olympic League, qualifying the Redskins for a Nisqually League crossover playoff game.
Port Townsend (5-9-0) will host North Kitsap for a senior night game Monday.
