PREP SPORTS: Sequim boys soccer blanks Bremerton; other area reports

SEQUIM — The Sequim boys soccer team’s continued its torrid scoring streak by striking in the first minute of a 4-0 victory over Bremerton.

After netting two goals in the final 10 minutes to salvage a 4-4 tie with Port Townsend on Tuesday, Sequim picked up right where they left off against the Knights on Thursday.

Kyle Harrison scored a first-minute goal off of an assist from Cameron Chase.

“He’s been on a tear as of late,” Wolves coach Dave Brasher said of Harrison.

Will Bittner added a goal in the eighth minute, sending the ball into the net after a left-to-right cross from Chase.

Sequim took the 2-0 lead into halftime and didn’t let the Knights offense have many chances to score in the second half.

“We basically controlled the second half, and outshot Bremerton 18-3 for the whole game,” Brasher said.

Harrison added his fourth goal in two games in the 76th minute off of an assist from Bittner.

Chase scored the final goal in the 78th minute, with freshman Josiah Urquia tallying the assist.

Brasher lauded the play of midfielder Eli Berg, naming him his man of the match.

“He’s not on the score sheet, but Eli controlled the middle and really did yeoman’s work for us,” Brasher said.

The Wolves (3-2, 4-3-2) next visit Olympic League-leading Kingston (5-0, 7-2) on Tuesday.

Klahowya 5, Port Angeles 0

BREMERTON — The Class 1A Eagles blanked the Roughriders in a nonleague game.

“Klahowya put a lot of pressure on [us] in the first half but weren’t able to capitalize until the 35th minute,” Port Angeles coach Chris Saari said.

“Klahowya passed the ball well and pressed hard in the second half, opening up the scoring with four additional goals.”

Saari said that every Port Angeles player who suited up played in Thursday’s match.

Port Angeles (3-2-0, 6-3-0) will look to snap its two-game losing streak when it hosts winless North Mason (0-5-0, 0-7-1) on Monday.

Olympic 7, Port Angeles 3

BREMERTON — A tough sixth inning derailed the Roughriders’ chance to force a tie for first place with the Olympic League-leading Trojans.

Already leading 3-2, Olympic opened the sixth with two singles.

“They got a couple singles and had guys at first and second, so they were trying to bunt them down,” Port Angeles coach Vic Reykdal said of Thursday’s game.

“[Pitcher] Travis [Paynter] fielded the bunt and went for the easy out at first, and he threw it over the first baseman’s head and two scored.”

The Trojans added another run off a second Port Angeles error, this one coming on a popup over second base.

“They got that one and then slid one more past us,” Reykdal said. “Just a bad inning for us.”

Paynter recorded six strikeouts in his 5 1/3 innings on the mound.

Port Angeles was led at the plate by Jace Bohman, who went 2 for 3 with a double.

“He continues to hit the ball real well for us,” Reykdal said.

The Riders picked up two runs in the top of the second inning when Logan Ciaciuch singled home Janson Pederson and Matt Hendry followed with a well-executed squeeze bunt to score Curan Bradley.

“We were trying to manufacture some runs there and Matt laid down a perfect bunt,” Reykdal said.

The Riders (4-2, 5-3) visit Port Townsend (0-2, 0-6) on Tuesday.

COUPEVILLE — The Cowboys allowed too many walks, committed too many errors and mustered just four hits in their Olympic League 1A loss to the Wolves

“Tough game tonight,” Chimacum coach Andy Lingle said of Thursday’s game.

“We couldn’t get hits put together. When we hit the ball, it was right at them.

“Too many walks and five errors put us on the edge every inning.”

Logan Shaw was a bright spot for the Cowboys, going 2 for 3 at the plate.

Myles Hundley added a double for Chimacum (1-2, 1-9).

The Cowboys visit Kingston (1-5, 2-6) on Monday.

Eatonville 8, 11, Forks 3, 1 (doubleheader

BEAVER — The Spartans dropped both ends of an Evergreen League doubleheader to the Cruisers.

Although the second contest was a lopsided 11-1 affair, the Spartans dirtied up their uniforms plenty during a hard-fought 8-3 loss in Thursday’s first contest.

“The score doesn’t reflect what Javier did out there today,” Forks coach Wayne Daman said of Javier Contreras, the senior hurler who took the loss in the first game.

“He really threw a gem out there.”

Contreras gave up just three earned runs in his complete-game performance.

Things looked promising early on as Contreras hung zeros on the board.

Forks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Contreras helped himself out with an RBI single to plate Parker Browning, who had led off the inning with a double.

Eatonville responded with four runs in the top of the fourth inning with a rally that began with a curious reversed out call at first base.

A cluster of errors in the top of the fifth inning allowed the Cruisers to post two more unearned runs and extend their lead to 5-1.

In the Forks half of the fifth, Contreras tried to spark his own rally by singling, then stealing second base, and then third.

Dancing off of third base, Contreras was caught in no-man’s land when Billy Palmer hit a hot grounder back to the pitcher.

Caught in a rundown, Contreras was able to juke the Cruisers into an awkward rundown and slid safely headfirst beneath the tag of the catcher.

Palmer would eventually score on an RBI single up the middle by Ryan McGraw.

The Spartans’ comeback came up short, though, and Eatonville tacked on three runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Contreras went 3 for 3 at the plate with a double, three stolen bases, an RBI and one run.

Gabe Stretch earned the victory for Eatonville, racking up 10 strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Kyle Pedersen picked up the win for Eatonville in game two while Spartan freshman Chance Wilson took the loss.

Marshal Grant drove in Forks’ only run of the game with a two-out line-drive single to right field in the second inning.

Browning, Palmer and Reece Blattner also collected hits for the Spartans.

Blattner also was a defensive standout for Forks on the day, playing second base, third base and pitcher, and making a rolling, tumbling catch on a line drive in between second and first base to end a Cruiser rally in the first game.

“I thought we played our best game of the season that first game,” said Daman. “It just didn’t turn out the way we wanted it to.

“That second game? That’s just the way it goes sometimes.

“We’ve got three freshman starters and two of them are eating lots of innings on the mound. Sometimes you’re just going to get your feet wet.”

Forks (0-7 in league) will host Tenino on Monday to replay a game from the first week of the season that was invalidated by a protested call.

The Spartans won their protest appeal of a disputed third to first pickoff attempt.

The game will be replayed from the point immediately preceding the protested call, which was during the top of the second inning with Tenino holding a 2-0 lead.

Nizhoni Wheeler struck out 14 and allowed two hits and seven walks to earn the complete-game victory.

Natalie Steinman led Port Angeles at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs.
