SEQUIM — The Sequim girls basketball team showed no signs of rust after not playing for more than two weeks.
The Wolves passed and shot their way to a 72-38 rout of North Mason in their first game following winter break.
The win improves Sequim to 2-2 in Olympic League play (5-5 overall).
The Wolves shot 60 percent (30 for 50) from the field Tuesday, including 59 percent (10 for 17) from 3-point range.
“Finally,” Sequim coach Evan Still said, “we shot the ball like we know we can.
“It was the best team win that I have ever been a part of as a coach.
“We passed up good shots for great shots. We had 27 assists on 30 made shots.
“Team passing doesn’t get much better than that.”
Sequim welcomed back senior Caitlin Stofferahn, who scored 19 points in her first game since injuring her anterior cruciate ligament near the end of the 2013-14 season.
“It was very nice to get Caitlin Stofferahn back,” Still said. “She stretches the defense and opens things up on the inside.”
Adrienne Haggerty led Sequim with 22 points on 11 for 12 shooting, eight rebounds and three steals.
“Adrienne Haggerty had a big night for us. She is a great athlete and she finishes very well on the inside,” Still said.
Jordan Miller also reached double figures for the Wolves with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. She also had four assists.
Point guard McKenzie Bentz dished out six assists while committing only one turnover and had three steals.
Kylee Williams tied Bentz for the team-high in assists with six and pulled down seven rebounds.
Mikaela Shumaker led North Mason (1-2, 5-5) with 17 points.
Sequim continues Olympic League play Friday at home against rival Port Angeles (1-2, 4-6) at 5:15 p.m.

POULSBO — Maddie Boe’s only point of the game came on a free throw with 23 seconds left in the game.
It ended up being the difference for the Roughriders, who picked up a much-needed Olympic League win, their first of the season, on the road against the Vikings.
North Kitsap created opportunities to tie or win Tuesday’s game after Boe’s free throw made the score 42-40.
The Vikings made a free throw of their own and then forced a turnover to regain possession with 16 seconds remaining.
But Olivia Selembo’s lay-in fell short and North Kitsap was unable to get off another shot before time expired.
Earlier in the fourth quarter, Port Angeles’ Katyn Flores and Lauren Lunt each hit two key 3-pointers.
Flores and Hayley Baxley paced the Riders with nine points each, while Lunt had eight.
Along with her important free throw, Boe had six rebounds and topped Port Angeles with six assists and seven steals.
“Her defense, rebounding and floor leadership were huge for us last night,” Riders coach Michael Poindexter said.
Sophomore post Nizhoni Wheeler scored seven points and had 10 points.
“Nizhoni played her best all-around game of the year, both rebounding well and anchoring our 2-3 zone,” Poindexter said.
That zone defense held North Kitsap’s leading scorer, Rebekah Baugh, to 11 points.
Port Angeles (1-2, 4-6) continues league play with a big matchup on the road against rival Sequim (2-2, 5-5) on Friday at 5:15 p.m.
Tuesday’s loss drops North Kitsap, one of the preseason league favorites, to 1-3 in Olympic League (4-5 overall).

TACOMA — Down to four players for most of the fourth quarter, the Rangers still managed to stay close to the Eagles in SeaTac League action.
“It was an overly physical game that the referees let get out of hand from the start,” Quilcene coach Briana Weller said of Tuesday’s game.
“We lost one player to a knee injury early in the first half, one girl to dehydration cramps in the fourth quarter and one girl to foul trouble.”
Not even midway through the final quarter, the Rangers’ roster had dwindled from eight players to four.
Evergreen Lutheran (2-0, 6-0) continued its press defense, but Quilcene, though undermanned, kept pace with the Eagles, who only won the quarter by four points, 18-14.
“These girls battled it out all game and scrapped it out to the buzzer,” Weller said.
“They never quit. These girls just played harder as the circumstances became more formidable.
“Had things gone our way, I really believe the outcome of this game would have been different.”
Megan Weller led Quilcene with 19 points and Allison Jones added 15.
The Rangers (1-1, 8-3) next host another tough league foe, Crosspoint (1-0, 6-3), on Friday.

Alex Barry and Josh McConnaughey had nice all-around performances for Sequim.
Barry had 16 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks and three assists, while McConnaughey scored 11 points, grabbed 10 boards, blocked three shots and had three assists.
Payton Glasser added six points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Wolves.
Sequim shot only 18 of 65 from the field, 10 for 30 on 3-pointers and 6 for 15 at the free-throw line.
Matt Becker went off for 25 points to lead North Mason (1-2, 5-5). Daulton Geyer contributed 17 points.

PORT ANGELES — Lambros Rogers and Hunter Hathaway had double-doubles, but the Roughriders’ carelessness with the ball helped the Vikings earn a 30-point Olympic League road win.
“The story of the game was us turning the ball over, which led to easy baskets,” Port Angeles coach Kasey Ulin said of Tuesday’s game.
“We had 27 turnovers, which led to over 50 transition and fast break points [for North Kitsap].
“Give North Kitsap credit because they are a very good team and they controlled the speed of the game.”
The Riders stayed with the Vikings, one of the preseason favorites to contend for the league title, until early in the second quarter when North Kitsap went on a 17-1 run.
“A lot of those points came off of unnecessary turnovers, and this is something we have to improve at or we will continue to struggle against the pressure,” Ulin said.
Rogers had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Hathaway had 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Riders.
“One thing we did well was hit the offensive glass, and as a team we combined for 16 offensive boards,” Ulin said.
After trailing 50-25 at halftime, Port Angeles outscored the Vikings 27-25 in the third quarter.
“I was happy to see us come out and win the third quarter, especially after the horrendous second quarter we had,” Ulin said.
“Our kids never stopped fighting or playing hard, which shows me that we want it. Now we have to be mentally ready to execute.”
Cole Rabedeaux paced North Kitsap (4-1, 8-4) with 23 points, David Perry added 20 and Ethan Graebner had 18.
The 96 points are the most the Riders have allowed in a game this season, and it’s the first time they have given up more than 70 points.
Port Angeles (1-2, 4-6) will try to avoid its third league loss of the season on the road against rival Sequim (2-2, 5-5) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Wrestling
Port Townsend girls, boys compete
ELMA — The Redhawks had two first-place showings at the Elma girls tournament.
Team leader Charity Jesionowski went undefeated at Saturday’s meet to claim first in the 130-pound weight class.
Junior Chloe Rogers also went undefeated to take first place at 145 pounds.
Senior Hanna Welch placed second in the 140-pound division.
“The girls are pushing themselves,” Port Townsend coach Steve Grimm said, “working harder than everybody in the room, and it has started to pay off.”
The Port Townsend boys, meanwhile, competed at the Cardinal Classic at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma.
In the 16-man bracket stacked with Class 2A and 3A wrestlers, senior Shae Shoop was the Redhawks’ lone placer, taking fifth in the 120-pound class.
The Redhawks travel to the Highline combined boys and girls tournament Saturday.
