PREP SPORTS: Swim and dive set for districts; soccer playoffs set

PORT ANGELES — In their final chance to qualify for the postseason, area swimmers and divers competed at the Divisional Invitational at William Shore Memorial Pool.

Port Angeles achieved three new individual district standards. Crescent’s Aubrie Scott also qualified for districts in 1-meter diving.

Divers fared well at the meet as the Roughriders’ Anne Edwards earned a district-qualifying score of 296.3 points and Spencer Lewis totaled 258.65.

Crescent’s Aubrie Scott also will compete at the district meet by posting a dive total of 232.2.

Port Angeles’ Ashlee Seelye earned a qualifying time in the 200 freestyle of 2 minutes, 11.20 seconds.

Riders coach Rich Butler noted that Port Angeles has 13 swimmers qualified in 43 individual events heading to the district meet, along with two divers.

The Riders have qualified all three relay teams for state, Felicia Che has three state qualifying times and Nadia Cole has qualified for state in seven of the eight individual disciplines, only missing out on the 100 butterfly.

One more event

Sequim added one individual event qualifier at Tuesday’s meet according to Wolves coach Bob Pease.

“Sydney Swanson made it in the 200 freestyle in 2:22.93,” Pease said. “That was something she had wanted to do all year.”

Pease said the Wolves will take 12 athletes to the district championships at Hazen High School and Lindbergh High School (diving competition only) in Renton on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3.

Sonja Govertson is a state qualifier in the 50 and 100 free and 100 butterfly for Sequim and Nia Coffman has state times in the 50 and 500 free.

Preliminary swimming events begin Friday, Nov. 2 at 5 p.m., while diving preliminaries and finals start at 10:30 a.m. at Lindbergh.

The swim finals start at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3.

The top six places in each individual event advance to the state meet in Federal Way on Nov. 9-10. Swimmers and divers also can make state by earning a state-qualifying time or point total or by earning a wild-card slot.

Girls Soccer Olympic 3, Port Angeles 1

BREMERTON — The Roughriders dropped their regular season finale on the road in a contest that decided second and third place in the Olympic League 2A Division.

Port Angeles is the No. 3 seed to the West Central District Tournament and the Riders will face South Puget Sound League No. 4 seed, which will be the winner tonight of a match between Fife (15-2-1) and Tyee (13-5-0), in a loser-out match at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Fife breezed to the SPSL West title with a 12-0 league mark but lost twice in the SPSL League Tournament to drop down to the fourth playoff spot.

In Tuesday’s game, Olympic jumped to the lead with a 35-yard free kick that nicked the crossbar and dropped in. Port Angeles came out flat in the second half and conceded a corner which the Trojans put into the goal after some sloppy defending for a 2-0 lead.

“We talked at half about coming out strong and climbing back into the game, but top teams will punish your basic mistakes of not clearing the ball,” said Riders coach Scott Moseley.

Port Angeles was able to pull a goal back in the 66th minute.

Millie Long beat Olympics speedster defender Hannah Troy who was tasked with marking her and calmly finished with a strong right-footed shot.

It was Long’s 20th goal of the season, which moves her into fourth on the all-time single season scoring list. She moved past Abbie Moseley who netted 19 during her senior year in 2009.

The comeback was short lived as the Trojans were gifted a third goal 30 seconds later, again after some poor defending.

“We worked so hard to get shots on goal that it knocked us back to give up a goal so quickly after we scored.”

Moseley singled out the play of Delaney Wenzl who combined strong defense with solid passing and high work rate in the midfield.

The Riders finished the league season one place higher than last year and with one more win overall. They have high hopes of another run at state like last season, which saw them earn a berth in the Elite Eight (state quarterfinals).

Sequim 3, Kingston 2

SEQUIM — Despite the tight final score, the Wolves held down the Buccaneers to continue their strong form heading into the postseason.

Sequim (5-7-0, 7-8-1) won five of its last six Olympic League 2A Division games and six of its final seven games overall to earn the league’s fourth seed to the district tournament.

The Wolves will face the South Puget Sound League’s sixth seed in a loser-out match at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma at 2 p.m. Saturday.

“We played decent,” Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said. “We kind of knew going into it wasn’t going to change standings or seeding into districts. So we worked on several different aspects of the game and brought up some swing players to rest some others.”

Sequim scored on goals by Daisy Ryan, Hannah Wagner and Jessica Dietzman.

“On all three goals we worked the ball up the field and made good plays on the ball,” Vander Velde said.

It’s been an excellent climb up the standings for the Wolves, who sat at 0-6 in league through the first half of league play.

“The first half of the season we had some major injuries, lost some girls for the rest of the season and we were trying to get the girls to fit into new positions,” Vander Velde said.

“The first half we were adjusting the entire system to make sure we could compete. And we lost two games in PKs and two other games by one goal.”

Vander Velde said it was a matter of staying positive.

“The girls just had to dig down and fully find themselves and push through,” he said. “Focusing on the positive aspects of the game has had a huge impact for them.

“And the second half of the season has just been being confident in their abilities. Find the goal, shoot to the back of the net and work the ball up the field.”

Volleyball Montesano 3, Forks 2

MONTESANO — The Spartans lost a hard-fought five-set match 3-2 (25-23, 17-25, 15-25, 25-12, 16-14) to the Bulldogs, but they remain in second place in the Evergreen 1A League.

“We did lose to them in in five but it was a great battle. Girls worked hard and didn’t give up,” said coach Jenn LeDuke.

Julia Lausche had 30 assists, while Elliahna Kilmer had 18 kills and five blocks. Rian Peters had eight kills and three aces, while Jayden Olson served 100 percent and had seven kills. Britney Dean added five kills.

Forks (5-2, 10-4) plays its final regular-season home match tonight against league champion Elma (7-0, 9-4) for senior night.

Forks will play the Trico League No. 3, likely King’s Way Christian, in the Southwest District 4 Tournament at La Center Middle School at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Quilcene ousted

QUILCENE — The Rangers fell 3-1 to Evergreen Lutheran in a Sea-Tac League Tournament loser-out match on Tuesday.

With just three upperclassmen on a 13-player roster, Quilcene finished the season with a 9-6 overall record, 6-5 in league play.
