PREP SPORTS: Team effort lifts Port Angeles spikers to win over East Jefferson

Riders soccer team also picks up win

PORT ANGELES — A focused and connected Port Angeles swept past East Jefferson 25-14, 25-20, 25-18 in Olympic League North Division volleyball action at Port Angeles High School.

Roughriders coach Jennifer Reynolds said both the JV (which won 25-9, 25-12, 25-18) and the varsity played well in their contests.

“We had excellent communication on offense and defense and really cut down on our unforced errors,” Reynolds said.

Sophomore Lily Halberg had a solid all-around game, serving 13 of 13 with four aces while adding eight digs and seven kills.

Junior libero Kennedy Bruch served 11 for 12 with an ace and also totaled five digs and three kills.

Reynolds said junior Emi Halberg hit hard from the outside with seven kills and 12 digs.

Juniors Zoe Smithson and Sam Robbins each had four kills.

“Smithson added 12 assists and worked with teammate, senior setter Camille Stensgard, who had 20 assists, to run plays and execute the offense,” Reynolds said.

Port Angeles will hold its senior night at Thursday’s final home match of the season against Olympic.

“We will honor seven seniors this year: Jaida Wood, Ellie Getchell, Camille Stensgard, Ava Brenkman, Savannah Bray, Holland Jones and Emma Olsen,” Reynolds said.

PORT ANGELES — Millie Long, Teagan Clark and Bailee Larson all found the net as the Roughriders avoided falling to East Jefferson, a Class 1A team that had already notched victories over 2A Sequim, Kingston and Olympic.

Coach Scott Moseley gave kudos to the visitors.

“East Jefferson played a really skillful game,” he said. “They had a specific game plan and stuck to it. They tackled well and obviously are well coached. Those wins over the other 2A schools were no flukes.”

Long got the game off to a good start for the home Riders with a curling corner kick that the East Jefferson keeper couldn’t handle cleanly and put the Riders up in the second minute.

Long was fouled in the box in the 12th minute, and Clark’s penalty kick found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Moseley said East Jefferson clamped down after that, and for the next 60 minutes, the score stayed the same.

Port Angeles had the run of play, ending up with 34 shots for the night, while the visitors had five.

Port Angeles put the game away in the 74th minute on a Larson left-footed shot from 15 yards out that was assisted by Anna Petty.

Moseley was pleased with the number of shots taken by his team but concerned about the accuracy.

“We hit the frame of the goal three times and had other wide-open shots hit right at their goalie. For the second game in a row, we needed to finish better.”

It was the fourth shutout of the season for Port Angeles (7-1).

“It speaks highly of the team that we earned another shutout,” Moseley said. “Opponents rarely get a good look at the goal.”

The Riders have outshot their opponents 139-41 in eight games.

Port Angeles hosts Olympic for a senior night match tonight.

Klahowya 2, Sequim 0

SEQUIM — The Wolves played tightly with the Class 1A Eagles but couldn’t put things together offensively.

“It was 0-0 at halftime, and we kind of fell apart a little bit,” Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said. “The girls did play a really good game in both halves. We just were having a hard time finding connections in that last [offensive] third [of the field], and there were some miscommunications which led to their goals.”

Vander Velde said freshman Mikkiah Winter performed well at left back.

“She was able to show off her speed and agility and was able to close down one of Klahowya’s better players,” he said.

Fellow freshmen Kaia Lestage at center back and Taryn Johnson at forward also received praise for their performances.

Sequim (2-5) visits Kingston on Saturday.

Napavine 2, Forks 2, Napavine 3-1 SO

FORKS — The Spartans weren’t able to come away with a victory but walked away with their heads held high after taking the Tigers to a shootout.

Monday’s game remain tied 2-2 after regulation and two five-minute overtimes. The Tigers finally prevailed 3-1 in the shootout.

“That was our best game of the year,” said Spartans coach Tracy Gillette. “That was my favorite game that I’ve ever coached. To get to a shootout is an honor.”

Junior captain Candida-Rose Sandoval scored both of Forks’ goals, and the lone goal in the shootout.

Gillette said eighth-grader Haylijane Highfield played a great game as a left defender.

“She’s such a defining character on our team. I can’t wait to see what she can accomplish next year,” Gillette said.

Gillette also said Raven Edwards played a great game as the goalkeeper.

“She’s improved so much. She really did well. I’m proud of her,” Gillette said.

Forks wrapped up its schedule with a game at Adna late Wednesday.
