PORT ANGELES — Underclassmen played huge roles in Port Angeles’ 11-1 six inning softball victory against Kingston at Dry Creek Elementary School.

A big day at the plate from Roughriders freshman Natalie Steinman and great pitching from sophomore ace Nizhoni Wheeler powered the Riders to the win Friday.

Natalie Steinman also scored three runs.

“Nizhoni Wheeler pitched extremely well and helped herself offensively with three hits and two RBIs,” Randy Steinman said.

Wheeler struck out eight, and allowed just two hits and two walks in her six innings pitched.

Alyssa Wetzler was 2 for 2 at the plate for Port Angeles and sophomore Taylar Clark was 2 for 3 and scored two runs for the Riders (4-0, 9-0).

PORT ANGELES — Travis Paynter and Ryan Rodocker combined on a three-hit shutout as the Roughriders rolled past the Buccaneers at Civic Field.

Paynter struck out eight and walked one batter in his six innings of work.

He allowed three hits, two of them infield singles.

“It’s funny we felt like Travis wasn’t really sharp all day but then you go back and look at the book and his stats are great,” Port Angeles coach Vic Reykdal said.

“I wouldn’t mind having an off day like that.”

Rodocker came on and pitched an efficient seventh inning, with one strikeout.

“Ryan had a seven-pitch inning,” Reykdal said.

“He went in there and got it done and finished strong.”

Curan Bradley was 3 for 3 with a double, an RBI and scored a run to lead the Riders at the plate.

Logan Ciaciuch went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and scored; and Paynter helped his cause, going 1 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

“Everyone of those runs we drove in,” Reykdal said.

“They had a couple of errors to help us get base runners but our RBI production was solid.”

Port Angeles (5-2, 7-4) sits in third place in the Olympic League standings.

The Riders host North Mason (2-6, 5-10) on Monday.

Port Angeles wins Higgins Memorial

BREMERTON — The Roughriders stayed focused and played through tough weather conditions and difficult pin placements to earn the team title at the Tim Higgins Memorial Tournament at Kitsap Golf & Country Club.

Thursday’s victory was the school’s first Higgins title since 2004.

“We talked about having a game plan when I took them to Oak Table in Sequim for breakfast and we went over strategy,” Port Angeles coach Mark Mitrovich said.

“We showed a lot of mental toughness and quality shotmaking as every player reached that goal.”

The Riders’ Alex Atwell shot a six-over par 78 to tie with Klahowya’s Aaron Holliday for first place.

The pair then played a four-hole playoff, each bogeying the first and second holes, parring the third before Holliday earned his second straight individual title with a par on the par-3 sixth hole.

“Alex, if he could have gotten up and down on either of the first two holes, he would have won it,” Mitrovich said.

“People watching the playoff were pretty impressed with their [Atwell and Holliday’s play.”

Austin Peterson recorded an 82, Mason Jackson fired an 86 and Alex Brown shot 88 for Port Angeles.

The Riders won the title by 20 strokes on host Central Kitsap’s home course.
