BREMERTON — Sequim’s Callie Thompson finished second in the Olympic League tennis tournament, qualifying for the West-Central District III tournament later this week.
Thompson won three matches, all in straight sets, to qualify for the league championship match against Teagan DeVries of North Kitsap. Thompson beat Audrey Crossgrove of North Kitsap 6-0, 6-1, then beat Val Torres, also of North Kitsap, 7-5, 6-2.
She then went up against her Sequim teammate Tiffany Lam in the singles semifinals, winning 6-1, 6-3. DeVries, who has been to district and state in past years, won the championship match 6-0, 6-0. DeVries last year was beaten in the third-place match at state by Sequim’s Kendall Hastings.
Lam finished sixth and qualified for district as an alternate, meaning she gets to play if someone drops out. She beat Emma Murray of Port Angeles 6-2, 6-2, then beat Helena Rode of Bremerton 6-1, 6-2. Rode had an incredible match before losing to Lam, beating Christina Prescott of Kingston 6-4, 6-7 (10-12), 12-10.
In the consolation bracket, Lam lost to Noelle Oberholster of North Kitsap 6-1, 6-3, then lost to Torres 6-4, 6-4.
Sydney Thomas Harris of Sequim lost a pair of matches at league.
Port Angeles wasn’t able to qualify anyone for district but did get some victories. No. 1 singles player Waverly Mead was unable to play.
The doubles team of Cayleigh Alward and Abby Riffle won a match 6-0, 6-4 over Hannah Gerou and Lola Ramirez of Olympic, while the team of Sarah Hancock/Abby Robinson beat Roughriders teammates Katie Sperr-Crane/Ryle Medley 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Also qualifying for district as an alternate was the Sequim doubles team of Amara Gonzales and Sarah Yada. They beat the team of Cloie Rosas and Allena Koch 6-2, 6-0, then lost to North Kitsap’s Tiffany Le and Illana Brockett 6-4, 6-0.
They won two straight matches in the consolation bracket, beating Marilyn Lorenzo and Alejandra Reyes of Bremerton 6-4, 6-1 and beating Kaylee Cushman and Maynella Samonte of Olympic in a tough one 6-4, 0-6, 10-5.
The Sequim duo of Kendall Day and Christine Prorok won two matches, beating their Sequim teammates Keria Morey/Azlynn Judd 6-3, 6-4 and Lorenzo and Reyes of Bremerton 6-1, 6-4.
Morey and Judd won one match, beating Rosas and Koch of Kingston 6-2, 6-1.
The WCD District III meet begins Friday.
