PREP VOLLEYBALL: Port Angeles sweeps North Mason to lock up third place

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls volleyball team swept North Mason 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-19) to secure third place in the Olympic 2A League.

The Roughriders needed to win the makeup game to grab the league’s No. 3 seed. They finished with a 10-4 league record behind second-place Sequim (11-3) and first-place North Kitsap (14-0). All three teams have solid rankings in the state Ratings Percentage Index. North Kitsap is ranked No. 5 in the state, Sequim 18th and Port Angeles 20th.

Port Angeles was led by outside hitter Lily Halberg with 10 kills and eight digs. Setter Josephine Edgington had 21 assists and two aces. Libero Cindy Liang had 22 digs and Heidi Leitz had seven kills. Ava Hairell had three kills and two aces, while middle blocker Karma Williams had two blocks. Alexis Perry added four kills.

The Riders played No. 6 league seed Olympic (3-11) Tuesday night in their Olympic 2A League tournament opener. In past years, the Olympic 2A League tournament was purely for seeding in the district tournament. This year, the league tourney has been expanded to six teams, with four of the top teams automatically moving on to district. There also will be three at-large selections to district out of various 2A leagues in the Puget Sound area.

If the Riders win Tuesday (and Port Angeles did beat Olympic twice this year, though one match was a close 3-2 win), they will move on to play at Sequim at 6:15 p.m. Thursday. Sequim and Port Angeles split two matches during the regular season. If Port Angeles loses Tuesday, the Riders will play North Mason or Kingston on Thursday.

Sequim and Port Angeles both will move on to play league tournament matches Saturday.
