PREP WRESTLING: Forks fourth at Vashon; Port Angeles fourth at North Mason

VASHON — Forks got first-place finishes from Jake Weakley and Hayden Queen while finishing fourth at The Rock wrestling tournament on Vashon Island this weekend.

Meanwhile, Port Angeles wrestlers got a number of grapplers going to the championship round and came in fourth at the North Mason Invitational, also held this weekend.

Forks at The Rock

The Spartans’ Weakley went 3-0 on the weekend at 132 pounds, having to go to overtime to win with a 9-7 sudden victory over Dawson Husted of Zillah.

Queen won the 182-pound weight division, going 3-0. He won his championship match with an 18-2 technical fall over Kimball Rippy of Lakeside.

Several other Forks wrestlers placed as the Spartans tallied 116.5 team points. Zillah won the tournament with 187 points.

Three other Spartans made it to the championship bouts of their weight divisions, finishing second — Colton Duncan at 138 pounds, Hayden Baker at 170 pounds and Luis Morales at 285 pounds. Baker won three matches on the day while Duncan and Morales each won two.

Ariel Morales also finished fourth at 132 pounds, going 3-1 on the day.

Port Angeles, Sequim, Port Townsend at North Mason

BELFAIR — The Roughriders, Redhawks and Wolves had several wrestlers place at the North Mason Hawkins Memorial Tournament this weekend.

Port Angeles had three wrestlers who finished second — Scott Hedin at 120 pounds, Leslie Worthey at 220 pounds and Adam Borde at 138 pounds. Borde came particularly close to winning his division as he was beaten in a tight championship bout with an 8-6 decision by Payton Anderson of Stadium.

Other Rider wrestlers who placed include:

• Jack Harrelson, fourth, 132 pounds.

• Jason Kibe, fourth, 195 pounds.

• Josh Boe, fourth, 145 pounds.

• Thomas Arand, fourth, 152 pounds.

For Port Townsend, Kyle Caldwell (actually from Chimacum High School) finished second at 195 pounds, beating Kibe in the semifinals in an 11-6 decision.

Port Townsend’s Logan Massie was fourth at 145 pounds, Ian Linn-Glasgow was fourth at 152 and Odin Smith was fourth at 160.

In girls’ wrestling, Port Angeles’ Lilly Halberg was second at 123-130 pounds, winning two out of three matches. Roughrider Natalie Johnson was fourth at 101-109 pounds. Port Townsend’s Savannah Hoffman was third at 116-127 pounds and Sequim’s Petra Bernsten was third at 144-153 pounds.

In junior varsity wrestling, Sequim’s Isaiah Cowan won his 169-183 weight division, winning three straight matches with pins.

Port Angeles finished with 122.5 points, good for fourth. Bremerton won the meet with 154.5 points. Port Townsend had 64.0 team points, good for ninth.
