TACOMA — Forks wrestlers Walker Wheeler and Sloan Tumaua each claimed victories at Stadium High School’s King of the Castle Tournament earlier this week.
Wheeler claimed the 150-pound weight class in impressive fashion, winning all four of his matches by pin — all of them inside of the first minute of each match, including a 16-second win over Cleveland’s Moses Chesanau.
Tumaua, the reigning Class 2B state champion at 285 notched a win in the heavyweight division but had to work a bit harder than Wheeler. Tumaua earned a 7-6 semifinal decision over 4A Skyline’s Zayne Kuewa, a state participant last season.
The Spartans finished third overall as a team with 126 points, behind 2A River Ridge (189.5) and 3A Lincoln of Tacoma (179.5).
Abraham Montealegre went 3-1 for Forks at 113, Walker Rondeau was 3-1 at 132 and Aiden Ivey went 3-0 at 157 but was forced to medically forfeit in the championship round.
Forks girls wrestlers pinned down an 11th-place finish at Hoquiam’s Grizzly Stocking Stuffer Tournament.
Miley Blanton at 125 and Flora Horejsi at 110 pounds earned second-place finishes while Peyton Johnson was third at 120 for the Spartans.

ISSAQUAH — The Roughriders executed well off the bat and held a two-point lead at halftime, but Port Angeles turned cold and turned the ball over too many times in the second half of Thursday’s nonleague loss against the 4A Eagles.
“Our first half was one of the best halves we’ve played all year,” coach Michael Poindexter said. “We shot well, didn’t turn the ball over too much and played sound defense for most of the half.
“The second half was a different story. Our field-goal percentage dropped from 46-percent to 37-percent, and our free throw percentage dropped from 58-percent to 40-percent. We committed more turnovers in the second half and gave up more offensive rebounds. Issaquah started the second half with a 12-0 run, partly due to their improved second-half shooting, partly due to baskets off our turnovers, and partly due to second-chance points from offensive rebounds.”
Poindexter did like how his squad answered the run.
“Even though our shots didn’t fall, we worked hard on defense, forcing most of Issaquah’s turnovers in the late third and early fourth quarters.
We got to the free-throw line a season-high 27 times, a nice continuation of our getting the ball inside better in the second half against Neah Bay.
Lindsay Smith led us in scoring with 18 points. Lexie Smith had a team-high 9 rebounds and excelled in both zone defenses we ran. Morgan Politika had 8 points (4-5 FG), most of which came in the second quarter and were key in helping us get the first-half lead.”
Port Angeles (3-0, 5-4) hosts Washougal on Thursday.
