PREPS: Penalty kicks take down Port Angeles boys soccer; other area reports

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles boys soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season, falling to North Kitsap 3-2 in a penalty kick shootout at Civic Field.

The Roughriders and Vikings played to a 2-2 tie through regulation and two sudden death overtime periods.

North Kitsap placed all four of its penalty kicks in the net and goalkeeper Alex Blanchard saved two of the Roughriders’ kicks.

Port Angeles earns one Olympic League 2A point for Tuesday’s shootout loss. North Kitsap receives two points for the win.

The Riders (4-3, 7-4) are in third place in the league with 13 points, one point ahead of Sequim (4-3, 5-4-2).

The rivals face off for the third time this season Friday at Sequim High School at 6:45 p.m. Port Angeles has won the first two meetings.

Angel Rivero opened up the scoring Tuesday for Port Angeles in the 18th minute when he took a throw-in from Vincent Ioffrida, beat one player and put the ball over the rushing Blanchard.

The Vikings answered back twice in the first half on followed shots to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

The Riders were awarded a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, but Blanchard saved it and the ball went out for a corner.

On the ensuing corner, taken by Ben Schneider, Ioffrida elevated and knocked in a header to equalize the match.

The Riders held on, fending off late pressure with the wind against them, to force overtime and penalty kicks.

“It was a tough loss, but [we come] away with an extra league point that could be valuable in league standings down the road,” Port Angeles

Taking the one point away from the Vikings (6-1, 17 points) bumped them into second place behind Kingston (6-1, 18 points) by a point.

Saari picked Ioffrida as the Riders’ offensive player of the match, while Rivero earned the transition honors and Keenan Leslie the defensive honors.

North Kitsap also won the JV match 2-1.

Kingston 1, Sequim 0

KINGSTON — The Wolves held the Olympic League 2A-leading Buccaneers scoreless until the 72nd minute.

“It was a good, intense game,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said of Tuesday’s match.

“It was a pretty defensive battle.”

The loss drops the Wolves (12 points) one point behind rival Port Angeles (13 points) for third place in the league standings.

Sequim has a chance to leapfrog the Riders when the teams face off Friday night at Sequim High School.

“We’re trying to get a win off them this year,” Brasher said.

The Wolves outshot Kingston 6-4 in Tuesday’s match. They had a few good chances in the first half — a header by Patrick McCrorie and a free kick from Christian Benson — but were unable to capitalize.

Brasher was happy with the play of his defense, led by Benson, who was picked by Brasher as Sequim’s man of the match.

Forward Thomas Winfield returned from injury to play 10 minutes for the Wolves.

“He’s getting his feet under him,” Brasher said. “He played 10 minutes and didn’t get hurt, so that’s a good sign.”

However, Sequim’s Lane Danielson was hurt near the end of the game and will likely miss significant time.

Bremerton 6, Sequim 3

BREMERTON — The Wolves dropped their third straight game.

Sequim scored two in the third inning to tie the score at 2-2, then added a run in the fourth to tie it at 3-3.

But the Wolves’ scoring stopped there, while the Knights put up two runs in their half of the fourth and one more in the sixth inning of Tuesday’s game.

Tanner Rhodefer had two hits, a run, an RBI and a stolen base for Sequim. Evan Hurn doubled and Ian Dennis, Daniel Harker, Nigel Christian and Gavin Velarde each singled.

Harker pitched five innings to take the loss. He struck out four and allowed six hits.

Austin Hilliard relieved Harker for the sixth inning and struck out two while giving up one hit and one run.

Both pitchers were hindered by Sequim’s five errors, as three of Bremerton’s runs were unearned.

The Wolves (3-4, 7-6) host Olympic League 2A-leading North Kitsap (6-1, 10-2) today.

It is the second meeting this week between the two teams. The Vikings defeated Sequim 11-1 on Monday.

Riders, Redhawks delayed after two innings

PORT TOWNSEND — Port Angeles jumped out to a 13-0 lead after two innings before the game was called due to weather.

Roughriders coach Vic Reykdal didn’t know when or if Tuesday’s game would be completed.

Hoquiam 17, Forks 0

BEAVER — The burly Grizzlies brought their hot bats to the West End on a chilly day.

Evergreen League title-contending Hoquiam hung crooked numbers on the board in every inning in Tuesday’s win.

Five unearned runs in the first inning doomed Forks’ Javier Contreras to another loss on the mound.

Kolby Standstipher earned the win for Hoquiam by tossing four innings of shutout baseball.

Forks’ leadoff hitter Parker Browning brought a hot bat of his own, pummeling a triple to the right-center field wall in his first at-bat of the game.

Gavin Palmer and Ryan McGraw added hits to the Spartans’ sparse tally.

“Our defense has not been up to snuff as of late, and it’s not fair to our pitchers,” Forks coach Wayne Daman said.

“We’ve got to do a better job of getting outs for our pitchers.”

Daman added that he was pleased with his team’s effort to scratch out two runs in the final frame, and noted that it was the bottom of the lineup that got things rolling.

“Those guys have been doing a good job of being aggressive and looking to hit,” Daman said.

Forks (0-9) will face the Grizzlies (8-1, 10-2) again today at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.
