PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles scored two late goals in regulation and goalkeeper Marcus Hogan saved two North Mason penalty kick attempts as the Roughriders rebounded for a 3-2 boys soccer win at Peninsula College on Thursday.
After two scoreless 5-minute overtime periods, Port Angeles won the enusing penalty kick shootout 4-2. It was a win the Riders really had to work for after coming back from a 2-0 deficit with less than seven minutes to play.
“It was one of the best comeback wins the Riders have had in a long time,” coach Chris Saari said. “PA scored two quick late goals in a seemingly bleak situation with time running out in the second half.”
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard early in the game and had the majority of the possession of the ball throughout the game.
North Mason scored in the 14th minute after a ball got in behind the Riders’ defense and the Bulldog player beat Hogan to the far post.
A goal on a flicked header just before halftime put Port Angeles in a 2-0 hole.
“The Riders were a little deflated at halftime after conceding a goal early and then giving up another one right before the end of the half,” coach Chris Saari said.
Saari said Port Angeles went into the game missing three starters and with players playing thru other injuries.
“The Riders regrouped at halftime and never gave up in the second half even though time was running out and it was still 2-0.”
Port Angeles found the net late after a formation change put an extra forward Kaleb Gagnon up front.
In the 73rd minute Gagnon dribbled into the box, pushed the ball around the goalkeeper as he came out and finally passed the ball into the open net.
With time running out very late in stoppage time, the Riders got a corner kick and brought everyone forward including Hogan to try and get the last second equalizer.
“PA dreams came true,” Saari said. “The Riders equalized on an inswinging corner kick from the left side by Keane McClain. Matthew Miller got to the near post and flicked the ball into the far post with his head for the equalizing goal.”
Miller and Gagnon were Saari’s offensive players of the match, while Hogan, Grant Butterworth and Landon Close were praised for their defensive work and McClain lauded for his play in transition.

BREMERTON — Josh Alcaraz assisted on the Wolves’ initial goal by Keaton King and sent in the game-winning free kick in the second half as Sequim won its third straight game.
“Two nice goals,” coach Juan Carlos Cisneros said. “Keaton King from Josh Alcaraz in the first half from a shot outside the half moon of the penalty kick box. Second half Josh Alcaraz from a free kick outside right side of the box.”
“The boys are improving. We spoke pregame about creating more scoring opportunities, taking more shots from distance and getting a set piece goal. We were able to do all those things and came out on top.”
