PREPS: Riders sweep East Jefferson in girls swimming

Ellefson, Bloomenrader fourth for Wolves

PORT ANGELES — Back in the lanes of Shore Aquatic Center, Port Angeles swept all 12 events and sank its East Jefferson counterparts 140-38 in a nonleague girls swim meet Wednesday.

“Senior standout Harper McGuire was the star of the day, not only contributing to the team’s overall success but also securing another spot for herself at the state championship meet, this time in the 200-yard freestyle,” coach Sally Cole said.

The meet began with the 200 medley relay, where the quartet of Lynzee Reid, Brooke St. Luise, Amayah Nelson and Lizzy Shaw displayed their teamwork and grabbed the top spot by 20 seconds in 2 minutes, 10.34 seconds.

McGuire shined with her state-qualifying win in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.88 ahead of Rivals’ runner-up Akeyla Behrenfeld in 2:26.71.

Nelson followed by clinching a Port Angeles win in the 200 individual medley.

“McGuire was relentless in her pursuit of victory, nabbing another first-place finish in the 50 free in 27.31,” Cole said.

The 100 butterfly was a clean sweep for the Riders, with Chloe Kay-Sanders taking the top position, closely followed by Shaw in second and Emerson DuBois in third.

Danika Asgeirsson added to Port Angeles’ lead by taking first place in the 100 freestyle. Behrenfeld earned her second runner-up finish of the meet for East Jefferson in the 100 free.

Nelson showcased her endurance by securing another Port Angeles win, this time in the 500 freestyle, her third win of the meet.

The Riders’ 200 free relay team, made up of Shaw, Yau Fu, Asgeirsson and McGuire maintained the winning streak.

St. Luise dominated the 100 backstroke and Port Angeles swept the 100 breaststroke with Faye Dachs leading the charge, followed by Olivia Mesen in second place and Ilvy Gattermayer in third.

The Riders wrapped the meet with a win by the 400 free relay team, featuring Shaw, Asgeirsson, Fu and McGuire.

“In diving, PA continued their winning streak. Fu soared to first place (152.8 points), displaying precision on the board. Reid (138.4) took second and St. Luise (135.65) claimed third,” Cole said.

“In addition to these remarkable feats, Damun Seera was the most improved swimmer, who achieved personal season records in all her events. Notably, she shaved seven seconds off her 200 freestyle and two seconds in her 50 free. She also posted personal-best splits in the 200 and 400 free relays.”

Cross country

BELFAIR — A windy course through portions of the North Mason High School campus and nearby forest proved confusing for some competitors in the fifth Olympic League cross country meet of the season on Wednesday.

Kaitlyn Bloomenrader of Sequim led all Wolves and Port Angeles runners, earning a fourth-place finish in the 3.1-mile race in 24 minutes, 10.94 seconds despite going off course. Bloomenrader’s prior 5,000-meter times were in the low 22-minute mark this season.

Port Angeles freshman Miriam Cobb was fifth, just back of Bloomenrader in 24:11.82, and Roughriders’ teammate Faerin Tait was 16th in 24:50.23.

Sequim’s Birdie Pyeatt (26:05.71) placed 30th, Krista Charters was 31st (26:52.73) and Lilly Despain ended up 32nd in 27:27.26.

Port Angeles’ Mirabel Palacios came in 46th (29:00.91) and Evian Moniz was 47th in 29:02.73.

North Kitsap’s Kendall Becker won the race in 22:46.86 and Bainbridge claimed the team win with 38 points. Port Angeles and Sequim didn’t have enough athletes to register a team score.

Colby Ellefson led area boys with a fourth-place finish for Sequim in 17:11.36. The Wolves finished fifth as a team with 132 points.

Reid Randall was 26th in 19:24.59; Adrian Osborne 31st in 19:40.2; Solas McGruther 33rd in 19:50.77; and Bowen Zhu 38th in 20:31.01.

Easton Dempsey led Port Angeles with a 22nd-place finish in 19:02.22.

Tymur Lytvak was 27th for the Riders in 19:28.9, while Jayden McClary was 28th in 19:29.37; Andre Campbell 29th in 19:33.67; and Justin Garrett 30th in 19:38.42.

The Riders were sixth as a team with 136 points.

Bremerton’s Dallin Anderson (17:04.49) edged Kingston’s Lucas Lenz (17:04.88) for first. Kingston won the team title with 48 points.
