PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles had been working on getting off to quicker starts in games during recent practices and it paid off almost immediately in an 8-1 win over North Mason on Thursday evening at Wally Sigmar Field.
“We want to better use the pregame warmup, so we don’t use the first 10 minutes to get into the game and get ready,” Roughriders girls soccer coach Daniel Horton said.
Less than a minute into the contest, Port Angeles junior Teanna Clark found the back of the net.
“Teanna was back to her old ways,” Horton said. “She scored our first goal 41 seconds in, a header in off a Pyper Alton cross. And then at 24 minutes, Teanna finished another cross from Pyper, also from the right side on the inside of her foot. Two perfectly placed balls by Pyper.”
Junior striker Kedryn DeScala then added a natural hat trick, scoring three goals in six minutes (26th, 28th and 32nd) for a 5-0 Port Angeles lead.
“She had a ton of assists for us last year at the striker position, but we wanted her to score this year,” Horton said. “She has the ultimate green light and she definitely listened to us last night. She hurt her ankle in practice and was limited in minutes vs. Klahowya on Monday, but she came out strong.”
Clark assisted on DeScala’s first goal and freshman Mariah Traband assisted on DeScala’s 32nd-minute strike.
The Riders scored off a corner kick for a 6-0 halftime lead.
“We wanted to get shots on frame,” Horton said. “That was an emphasis at practice. We have to be able to transition, control the ball and turn that into a shot opportunity.”
Clark sent in the corner, Traband settled the ball and made a square pass to defender Sophie Richie, who was there to shoot and score.
Senior defender Ava-Anne Sheahan scored five minutes into the second half and another defender, Brooke Pierce, rounded out the goal scoring in the 66th minute.
“She came up from center back and had nothing but space, so she dribbled up and put in a great shot,” Horton said. “We had some finesse shots and some shots where we would not be denied, and that was a laser.”

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders (2-0), didn’t drop a set in singles and won a couple of tough, three-set matches in doubles to earn the sweep, coach Brian Gunderson said.
“I couldn’t be happier with how our guys have started this season. We still have a lot of improving to do, but the guys have worked hard and it’s paying off on the court,” Gunderson said.
Gundersen singled out Tate Alton as his player of the match.
“Tate has stepped into the No. 1 singles slot for us this year and he has taken to it really well,” Gunderson said.
Port Angeles is back on the court next Tuesday at Olympic.
