SEQUIM — Mekhi Ashby came off the bench to score a second-half goal and James Mason added the winning goal in Sequim’s 2-1 boys soccer win over North Mason at home Thursday.

“The boys defended well in pivotal moments and got key stops,” coach Juan Carlos Cisneros said. “Plus we limited the mistakes in our defending third which had been hurting us in past games.

“We were better in front of the goal finishing our chances in the second half. Our subs played great and contributed on both sides of the ball. Good team win, the boys earned it. Happy to see them come out on top in another close game.”

Cisneros said Ashby and Keaton King were especially effective in reserve in the contest.

Sequim (2-6-0) hosts rival Port Angeles (4-3-1, 5-3-1) on Tuesday. The Roughriders’ home game with Kingston on Thursday was postponed to April 22 after the Buccaneers couldn’t arrange transportation.

Boys Golf Port Angeles 171, Bremerton 213

PORT ANGELES — Edun Bailey tied for low round of the day, a 5-over-par-41, to earn match medalist honors along with Bremerton’s Jackson Fletcher on Thursday at Peninsula Golf Club.

Austin Worthington and Cale Wentz added 43s for Port Angeles and Phoenix Flores and Nate Anderson were just behind at 44 apiece.

Girls Golf Port Angeles 212, Bremerton 279

PORT ANGELES — Piper Williams earned match medalist honors for the second time this week after shooting a 47.

Lauryn Chapman added a 53, while Claire Osterberg posted a 54 and Mia Neff a 58. Izzy Spencer carded her best round, a 63.

Port Angeles (6-0) hosts Kingston on Monday.

Track & Field Wolves, Riders win

KINGSTON — Port Angeles’ boys and Sequim’s girls raced to meet victories on Thursday.

Jack Gladfelter claimed the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs for the Riders. Trevor Martin also won two events for the Riders, setting new bests in the shot put (39.475) and discus (111-10). Jason Hawes won the 100 sprint in 11.82 seconds and Tymur Lytvak set a personal record to win the 400 in 55.17 for Port Angeles.

Andrew Brown won the high jump (5 feet) and the 110-meter hurdles (16.57) for the second-place Sequim boys.

Jolene Vaara set a new best distance of 15-9.5 to win the long jump and cleared 4’6 in the high jump to earn two wins for the victorious Sequim girls. Vaara teamed with Hi’ilei Robinson, Kaitlyn Bloomenrader and Ivy Barrett to win the 4×200 relay in 1:52.10. Barrett also set a new record of 2:40.93 in winning the 800.

Port Angeles freshman Leia Larson won the 3,200 in 12:38.35.
