SEQUIM — Sequim’s improvement in its second game, a 5-1 home boys soccer win over Kingston, highlighted by a Nico Musso hat trick, was seen in all aspects according to coach Dave Breckenridge.
“It was a good win for the team after what happened in our opener against Bremerton [a 3-1 defeat]. This was a much-needed mindset change,” Breckenridge said.
“Our offense put up a lot of fight, our defense did a fantastic job doing what they needed to do,” he said.
“Our midfield struggled a bit, the idea of what we are doing is a more controlled, possession-and-pace type of game, but we made the right connected passes at the right times.
“There’s lots to go over. We are trying something new and think this is a step forward.”
Musso was in the right spot to send in all three of his goals.
“Nico Musso put in a hat trick, he continued to chase and follow,” Breckenridge said. “Evan Cisneros was able to put one in the net and he needed that. His heart is so into the game. He took like eight or nine shots against Bremerton and was so close, so it was nice to see him get one on one or two shots.”
Returning first-team All-Olympic Leaguer Josh Alcaraz added the last goal for Sequim.
“He’s our energizer bunny,” Breckrenridge said. “He comes back and supports a lot of the midfield and he was able to put one in the net.”
Sequim (1-1) hosts North Mason at 7 p.m. Friday.
Port Angeles 3, N. Mason 0
BELFAIR — A productive first half lifted the Roughriders on the road Tuesday.
Port Angeles picked up a brace by offensive player of the match Matthew Miller and earned the team’s first road shutout since April 2023, according to coach Chris Saari.
Miller battled a Bulldog defender for possession of a through ball on the right side of the penalty box, winning the ball and pushing it past the defender before turning the corner toward the goal along the end line.
“Matthew slotted the ball past the goalie to the far post as the goalie came off his near post,” Saari said.
Oliver Martinez lofted a 25-yard shot over the head of the North Mason goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead in the 27th minute. Two minutes later, Martinez was part of another scoring play, finding Jacob Weaver in the midfield.
Weaver then found Miller running in behind the defense and Miller beat the goalkeeper to the far post for a 3-0 lead.
“Although our team was a little banged up with injuries, we stuck with it and fought till the end,” Miller said. “Last year, we lost 7-1 at North Mason which adds to the satisfaction of this victory.”
“[Port Angeles] had a few good chances in the second half but were unable to add to the score,” Saari said. “A North Mason player got a straight red card for a really dirty tackle on Port Angeles’ Kanyon Anderson in the 50th minute. The Bulldogs played a man down for the last 30 minutes of the game.
Saari named Martinez and Weaver his transition players of the match and Grant Butterworth was tops defensively for the Riders.
It was the second shutout for Port Angeles goalkeeper Gus Halberg, a former Storm King select player who returned to soccer for his senior season.
“It feels good. It’s my first year back to playing soccer and I feel a lot of support from the rest of the team,” Halberg said. “It’s cool to get a shutout in an important league game.”
Port Angeles (2-0, 2-1) hosts Bainbridge at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Peninsula College.
