RECREATION: Indian Island Naval base to host fun run event

PORT HADLOCK — Naval Magazine Indian Island is hosting the installation’s annual Deer Run 5K and one-mile fun run on Sept. 16.

This event is free and open to the public. The race will have a one mile paved course near the waterfront, where strollers are permitted, and a 5K course on an unpaved route through a forested area and along the waterfront, where strollers are not permitted. Dogs are not allowed on the installation, with the exception of licensed service animals.

“My team at Naval Magazine Indian Island is looking forward to welcoming the community on base for this event and sharing some of the island’s natural beauty with race participants,” said commanding officer, Cmdr. Todd Galvin.

Participants will be able to enter Indian Island’s main gate, across Flagler Road from Indian Island County Park, starting at 8 a.m. Drivers will be directed to a checkpoint for vehicle inspection and identity verification. A valid form of identification, such as a driver’s license or other state or federal-issued identification with a picture, is required for entry and registration. Visitor parking will be available on base.

Same-day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Base entry and registration will close at 9:30 a.m., and the race will start at 10 a.m. All participants will be required to stay on base for the duration of the event, through the conclusion of an awards ceremony.

The top three male and female participants in youth and adult age categories will receive awards. A limited supply of race T-shirts will be available for purchase for $20 with a credit card or exact change only, while sizes and quantities are available. Indian Island Command merchandise will also be available for purchase with cash only, including hats and travel cups for $25, T-shirts for $20 and coins for $10.

Visitors to Indian Island are subject to inspection due to the installation’s security posture. As a reminder, the following items are prohibited on base: drugs or drug paraphernalia including marijuana and marijuana products, alcohol, weapons such as firearms or pocket knives, coolers, backpacks, drones or cameras with telephoto zoom lenses.
