ROWING: OPRA’s Schulz, Kennedy win at American Lake Classic

LAKEWOOD — Several Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association rowers placed in the American Lake Fall Classic on Sunday, with the tandem of Ella Schulz and Angelica Kennedy taking first place in the women’s junior doubles and the mixed masters group taking first place.

Schulz and Kennedy edged out 10 other boats in their race, winning with a time of 23 minutes, 35.9 seconds, beating a team from Burton Beach (Vashon Island) by nine seconds.

The mixed masters 4+ team had Vince Pavlak as the coxswain. This team won with a time of 26:49.2.

Coach Sam Helmick-Schwartzmiller took second in the women’s open single with a time of 24:41.9.

An OPRA 4x men’s JV team finished fifth with a time of 20:33.2. That boat was rowed by two separate teams on the weekend, by Harrison Fulton, Zigui Harper-Smith, Zach Gavin and Tyler Turner, then by Zitao Harper-Smith, Liam Getzin, William Ruddell and WIlliam Roening.

Gavin was fourth in the men’s junior race with a time of 23:26.9, less than one second out of third.

Gavin and Zitao Harper-Smith took fifth in the men’s JV double with a time of 22:32.5. Liam Getzin and Zigui Harper-Smith were ninth in the men’s JV double with a time of 23:37.

Schultz took sixth (26:06.9) and Kennedy seventh (26:40.3) in the junior singles.

Harrison Fulton and Tyler Turner finished ninth in the men’s JV with a time of 23:16.8.
