SOFTBALL: Rae throws no-hitter as Quilcene sweeps Evergreen Lutheran

QUILCENE — After a week of postponements, Quilcene got to play softball and swept a doubleheader against Evergreen Lutheran by scores of 16-0 and 15-2.

Junior pitcher Sammy Rae threw a no-hitter in the opening game, which counted in the 1B Sea-Tac League standings.

Rae pitched all five innings and struck out 12 batters. The only Evergreen Lutheran base runner reached on an error.

Rae had a nice game at the plate as well, going 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs.

Celsea Hughes was 3 for 3 and drove in two runs and Katie Bailey had the Rangers’ other hit.

“We ended up walking a bunch, so that really cut down our hits,” Quilcene coach Mark Thompson said.

The Rangers finished with 15 walks.

In the second game, a nonleague tilt, Quilcene beat the Eagles 15-2 in five innings.

Rae pitched the first two innings. She only played part of the game, but still went 3 for 3 at the plate with a double, a triple and five RBI.

Megan Weller had two hits and three runs, Allison Jones was 1 for 1 with a three-run double and Alexis Gray had two hits and drove in two runs.

The Rangers also received contributions from a pair of eighth-graders. Katie Love was 1 for 3 and Sydney Brown had an RBI double.

“We’ve got a lot of depth, a lot of girls who can play, from 1 to 24 [on the roster],” Thompson said.

“By the end of the day my head was just spinning, trying to get all these girls in.”

Weller pitched two innings, fanning two and allowing only one hit.

Bailey, who had never pitched before, was on the mound for one inning. She allowed a hit and a walk, but struck out three batters.

“I thought Megan and Katie pitched well,” Thompson said.

“Megan is our No. 3 pitcher, and I guess Katie’s our No. 4 pitcher now.”

Quilcene improves to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
