SOFTBALL: Sequim, Port Angles rout Olympic League foes

SEQUIM — Olivia Kirsch homered and doubled to help Sequim to another rout, this time 17-4 over Olympic in five innings.

The Wolves (5-0, 7-1) are in a three-way tie for first place in the Olympic League softball standings with fellow unbeatens Port Angeles (3-0, 3-2) and Bremerton (4-0, 5-0).

Kirsch homered Tuesday in Sequim’s seven-run third inning, which followed a nine-run second.

Kirsch, who finished with three RBI, was one of five Wolves with two hits. Also with two were Mary Lu Clift, who doubled and tripled, Melissa Lewis, Tia Bourm and Alysen Montileus.

Senior slugger Alexas Besand had one hit, but drove in four runs and scored twice.

As a team, Sequim smacked 15 hits.

On the mound, Makayla Bentz and Melissa Lewis combined to hold the Trojans (1-4, 2-5) to four hits and four runs.

Bentz allowed one hit over three innings with four strikeouts to earn the win. Lewis struck out three in two innings and scattered three hits.

Sequim plays at Port Townsend (1-3) today.

POULSBO — Sarah Steinman shut down the Vikings for four innings as the Roughriders remained undefeated in Olympic League play with a five-inning mercy-rule win.

At the plate, Port Angeles’ Nos. 1 and 2 hitters Carly Gouge and Haley Gray each went a perfect 4 for 4. Gouge had three runs and three RBIs and Gray drove in five runs.

Tori Kuch added three hits, including a double and a triple and two RBIs, and Ashlee Reid tripled and brought in two runs, and Cara Cristion had a pair of hits and a pair of runs for the Riders in Tuesday’s rout.

Port Angeles blew the game wide open with an 11-run fourth inning.

“[We] crushed the ball at the plate, got great pitching and again played errorless ball,” Riders coach Randy Steinman said.

On the mound, Sarah Steinman allowed only two hits and fanned seven in four innings. Freshman Nizhoni Wheeler worked a perfect fifth inning, striking out two batters.

Port Angeles (3-0, 3-2) travels to face Klahowya (0-3) today in a makeup game.
