Roughriders honored
PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles High School has recognized its first four Roughrider Student-Athletes of the Week.
Port Angeles volleyball player Elizabeth DeFrang and football player Nathan Angevine were recognized for the first week of the fall sports season.
DeFrang is a senior that coaches say has worked hard to sharpen her skills and stay in shape over the summer and it paid off when she made the varsity team this season.
Coaches also praise her leadership qualities.
She led the Riders with seven kills in their season opening match.
Angevine played a large role in two early wins for Port Angeles. He threw the game-winning touchdown and hauled in the game-clinching interception at the goal line in a 14-13 win against Port Townsend.
He also rushed eight times for 137 yards and two touchdowns as a fullback against Vashon.
Angevine also excels in the classroom, earning a 3.5 GPA.
Week two honorees are junior soccer player Maddie Boe and senior cross country runner Sam Waddell.
Boe, who lead the North Olympic Peninsula in scoring last year, had two goals and an assist in a season-opening win against Port Townsend.
Her coach said she also has filled a leadership role, becoming a team captain.
Waddell, a 4.0 student with several honors and AP classes, has trained and raced his way into a role in the starting seven for the Riders cross country team.
“Sam is everything a coach hopes for in an athlete: hardworking, team player, cerebral,” Port Angeles head coach Pat Durr.
“Sam is everything a teacher could ask for in the classroom: hardworking, involved, cerebral.”
