Port Angeles women’s hoops league starts Monday

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department’s women’s basketball league for ages 16 and older begins play next Monday.

The cost is $200 per team, plus an individual player’s fee of $28 for city residents or $42 for those living outside the city limits.

Sign-up forms are available at the Parks and Recreation office at the Vern Burton Center, 308 E. Fourth St.

Teams must be registered by Wednesday.

FEDERAL WAY — Port Angeles Swim Club members recently competed in sectional regional championship meets at the King County Aquatic Center.

Both meets included top qualifying swimmers from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska and Hawaii.

Jaine Macias, 15, and her older brother John Macias, 18, each broke two club records at the Speedo Sectional meet.

Jaine Macias set new best times in the 100-yard butterfly (59.44 seconds) and in the 400 individual medley in (4:43.74).

John Macias set a 200 backstroke record with a time of 1:57.02, and a 100 freestyle record with a time of 48.72.

Nadia Cole, 12; Carter Juskevich, 17; and Kenzie Johnson, 13, represented the club at the Northwest Region 2015 Short Course Age Group Championship.

Juskevich broke her own club record and took first in the 100 breaststroke for her age group with a time of 1:06.96.

Cole broke her own club record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:41.10.

Sequim baseball clinic

SEQUIM — Sequim varsity baseball team’s youth baseball clinic has been rescheduled to Thursday, April 9, at the high school baseball fields.

The clinic is for boys and girls in grades 3 through 8, and will run from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Registration is from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The cost is $20 per player, and includes a Wolves baseball cap and a snack.

Learn to row over spring break

PORT ANGELES — Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association and coach Rodrigo Rodrigues are offering youth clinics during spring break next week.

The clinics are open to youth 12 years and up, and run from 10 a.m. to noon each day.

The cost is $60 for the week.

Adult coed soccer league

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Parks and Recreation coed adult soccer league begins play Sunday, April 12, at Wally Sigmar Field on the campus of Peninsula College.

The cost is $55 per player. Deadline for registration is this Friday. The league is open to men age 18 and older and women age 16 and older. Sign-up forms are available at the Parks and Recreation office.

Players without a team can be put on a free agent list.

Gymnasts prep for postseason

PORT ANGELES — The Klahhane Gymnastics teams concluded their regular season competition with a intrasquad meet for family and friends at Klahhane Gymnastics on Sunday, March 23.

Gymnasts are now preparing for postseason competition.

In Level 6 competition, Kianna Miller led the team with a 34.150 all-around score, picking up event scores of 9.2 on balance beam and 9.15 on floor exercise.

Anne Edwards was a close second with 34.125 in the all-around, with a 9.1 on floor and an 8.625 on vault.

Emma Sharp had the high score on floor exercise of 9.3. Zoe Smithson picked up a 8.575 on vault and Gracie Sharp scored 9.1 on balance beam.

All team members qualified for the Level 6 Optional State Meet at Everett Community College.

The Level 4 team participated in the fall compulsory season and were doing their first meet as Level 5s.

Kori Miller made a clean sweep of the awards, taking first in every event and all-around with a final score of 32.575, which qualifies her to move to the Level 6 Optional Team for next season.

The team will travel to the Garden City Meet in Victoria, B.C., in May.

In Level 3, Cindy Liang all swept the four events, finishing with an impressive 35.750 all-around score, highlighted by 9.3 on vault as well as a pair of 9.0 scores on bars and floor.

Samantha Robbins scored a 34.4 in the all-around, and Dylan Baremann rounded out the top three with 33.5.

Also preparing for the North Sectional Competition on April 11 are Elena Gonzales, Kinzley Henrickson, Julia Jack and Taryn Johnson. The competition will be held at Northshore Gymnastics in Woodinville.

The Xcel gymnasts are preparing for their state competition April 25-26 at Everett Community College.

The Silver Division team was led by Maizie Tucker with a 35.3 all-around score and a 9.0 on bars.

Also competing in the Silver Division at state are Amber Dietzman, Summar, Jules-Stranberg, Kelsie Mackey and Ellie Turner.

In the Gold Division, top performer was Aiesha Matthis with a 9.0 on vault and 33.675 all-around.

Ennisa Albin, Julienne Jacobs and Cassidy Tamburro also will represent the team at the state competition.

State qualifiers in the Platinum Division are Cassii Middlestead and Danica Miller.

For the first time in four years, Sequim and Port Angeles rivals competed against each other on the track in college. Sequim’s Riley Pyeatt, left, a 2022 state champion in the 800 and 4x400, and Port Angeles’ Lauren Larson, who finished second in the 800, second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600 in the state in 2019, met at the Husky Indoor Track and Field Classic in Seattle this weekend. They both competed in the 1-mile run and both finished under five minutes. Pyeatt, who ran for Abilene Christian for a couple of years but now competes for Washington State, finished 57th with a time of 4:52.23, while Larson, who now runs for Boise State, was 75th in a time of 4:54.85.
