Port Angeles hoops teams in first-place tilts
PORT ANGELES — The first-place Port Angeles boys are playing one of their biggest games of the year tonight, going up against Olympic League 2A Division rival North Kitsap in a game that could decide the league championship.
The Roughriders and Vikings are tied at 9-1 at the top of the league (they are also both 15-3 overall), with one game left Friday to conclude league play. The Roughriders come in to the game on a seven-game winning streak and scored 100 points in their last win Friday against Kingston, possibly the highest-scoring game in Port Angeles High School history.
The Roughriders’ only league loss of the year was at North Kitsap in early December. The Vikings won that contest 61-51.
Winning the game doesn’t guarantee a league championship, as the Riders have one game left in league on Thursday. That game is on the road against a very good 8-2 Olympic team. North Kitsap concludes its regular season with a game at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Sequim. The Wolves are solidly locked into the fourth-place spot in the Olympic 2A league.
Tonight’s game begins at 7:15 p.m. It is also senior night in which the Riders seniors will be honored.
First place gets a first-round bye in the district playoffs, whereas second place guarantees a home playoff game in the opening round on Feb. 8.
Meanwhile, the Port Angeles girls are also playing a game tonight that could decide the Olympic League 2A championship. The Rider girls, winners of nine straight, are playing on the road at first-place North Kitsap. The Riders are 9-1 in league, while North Kitsap is 10-0. Again, the Riders’ only league loss this year was at home against North Kitsap 48-41.
The Port Angeles girls are guaranteed to finish in at least second place.
U14 volleyball takes first
PORT ANGELES — On January 21, the Washington Elite U-14 North Volleyball team won first place, going undefeated in seven matches on the day at a tournament at Franklin High School in Seattle. It was the team’s first-ever tournament. The girls beat NorthWest Juniors U-13, SSVBC U-14, Viper Volleyball Academy, PS Intensity 14, Bothell VBC U13, 206vb13 and Uprising 14-Green.
Quilcene girls lose to league leader MRL
TACOMA — The Quilcene girls struggled to take care of the ball and made too many mistakes going up against the Sea-Tac 1B West’s top team Mount Rainier Lutheran, falling 51-27.
“The Rangers struggled from tip off [in Saturday’s game]. We had a scoring opportunity off of the jump ball and missed it. Too many times we didn’t ‘see the floor’ and missed wide open scoring opportunities. We have the framework in place to get the looks to score but we don’t consistently utilize them,” said coach Brianna Weller.
Weller said the Rangers also had 30 turnovers, handing the Hawks 17 points off of turnovers.
Marissa Keiffer led the Rangers with 10 points and eight rebounds. Abby Weller had nine points, while Sydney Brown had six points and five boards.
Quilcene is now done with its regular season league play. The Rangers, the No. 2 team in the Sea-Tac 1B West, begin postseason play in the Sea-Tac 1B Tournament at home on Saturday, playing the No. 3 teams from the East division. That will be either Muckleshoot or Northwest Yeshiva.
Storm King wins
PORT ANGELES — The Storm King U-17 boys soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the 2018 Washington Youth Soccer Founders Cup Sunday with a 6-0 shutout over the Federal Way Football Club’s B01 Select team.
Storm King will face another FWFC team in the semifinal match on Sunday at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila. The game time is still to be determined. The other semifinal pits teams from Seattle United West against Seattle United South. The Founders Cup championship match is scheduled for Feb. 4.
In Sunday’s quarterfinal match held Sunday at Sigmar Field at Peninsula College, Ryan Tolberd scored a hat trick for the Storm King boys, who dominated Federal Way from the opening kickoff. The other three goals came from Andrew St. George, Hayuk Minano and Aron Trubow.
Pool reunion
PORT ANGELES — A reunion is being planned at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Front Street Alibi bar in Port Angeles for players who participated in the Katie Dugdale memorial pool tournament.
Katie Dugdale founded the women’s pool league in Port Angeles in 1972 and played in leagues until her death in 1981. A memorial pool tournament was played in her honor for 22 years.
Time permitting, an impromptu blind draw scotch doubles tournament may be played afterward.
