SPORTS: Brocklesby wins state track title; McMullin third; Welever and Christie second

TACOMA — Sequim senior Jayson Brocklesby ended his high school track and field career with a bang.

He captured the Class 2A state championship in high jump with a height of 6 feet, 5 inches, beating out three other competitors for first by an inch during Friday’s finals.

Brocklesby also claimed fifth place in the 400-meter sprint.

“I was really pleased how Jayson competed at state,” Sequim head track and field coach Brad Moore said.

It was looking bleak for Brocklesby for awhile in high jump.

“He was well behind the top four in the finals on misses,” Moore said.

“If he was going to win, he had to win it outright.”

And that’s exactly what Brocklesby did. He was the only one to clear 6-5 while three others had a best height of 6-4.

Everyone missed at 6-6.

“Jayson hung in there really well,” Moore said.

Then on Saturday in the 400 finals, Brocklesby made it to the podium one more time by a fifth-place finish in a time of 49.92 seconds.

Brocklesby is the first Sequim athlete to win at the state track meet since Frank Catelli won the shot put event in 2011 as a junior.

Catelli switched spring sports to golf as a senior and didn’t got out to defend his shot title. He currently is competing in shot for the Seattle University track and field team.

The 2013 2A championships were held at Mount Tahoma Stadium (Mount Tahoma High School) along with the 3A and 4A meets Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Sequim had one more athlete finish in the top three as senior Jasmine McMullin claimed third place in triple jump with a distance of 35 feet, 7 inches.

McMullin just missed making a second trip to the podium in another event as she took ninth place in long jump with a leap of 16-07.25, missing eighth place by half an inch.

“Overall, our kids did well,” Moore said.

The competition was tougher than it has been in past years.

For instance, the Wolves’ boys 4×100 relay team missed the finals despite running a blistering 43.77 seconds.

“They ran a really good time but the competition was just too fast this year,” Moore said.

Also finishing in the top 10 for the Wolves was senior Lopaka Yasumura, who claimed 10th place in shot put with a heave of 46-06.25 in the finals Friday.

Sarah Hutchison took 13th place for Sequim in pole vault with a height of 9 feet.

Junior Jolene Millsap led Port Angeles at the 2A meet by claiming seventh place in 100 meters in a time of 13.08 seconds.

Teammate Elyse Lovgren, a sophomore took 12th in long jump with a distance of 15-10.25 while Kyle Tupper claimed 12th in the boy 3,200 in 9:48.75 on Saturday, while he also was 14th in the 1,600 in 4:30.6 on Thursday.

Taking 13th place at state was Port Angeles junior Brittany Norberg, who threw the javelin 102 feet, 9 inches.

1B state track

CHENEY — Clallam Bay senior Justin Welever grabbed a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash at the 1B state track and field meet at Eastern Washington University on Saturday.

Welever, among the top sprinters in the state all season, ran the 100 in 11.81 seconds, just four-tenths of a second behind state winner Kyle McCrea of Wellpinit (11.78 seconds).

Welever added a fourth-place showing in the 200-meter dash.

Crescent’s Josh Sowder had a second-place showing of his own, leading a Loggers one-two finish in the shot put with a heave of 43 feet and 6.75 inches. Teammate Gene Peppard took third with a 42-01.75.

Lummi’s Deion Hoskins won the event by almost a foot, 44-06.5.

Sowder also placed third in the discus with a throw of 121-04, and Derrick Findley took third in javelin with a 157-01.

Donovan Christie gave Crescent another second place finish in the high jump, with a 6-02, which was surpassed only by a 1B state-meet record jump of 6-07 by Mansfield’s Macen McLean.

It was Christie’s second consecutive runner-up finish in the event. McLean won the 2012 high jump title, as well.

McLean also won the long jump title Saturday. Findley finished fourth (19-08.5), and Clallam Bay’s Casey Randall took fifth, a half-inch shorter than Findley (19-08).

Crescent sophomore Martin Waldrip contributed more points to the Loggers’ boys team score by taking fourth in the 3,200-meter run (10:46.10).

In the boys triple jump, Neah Bay sophomore Elisha Winck placed fourth with a 39-10.5. McLean also won this event with a jump of 44-10.5.

Clallam Bay’s Jesse Wonderly finished in eighth place in the 800-meter run with a time of 56.54.

1B Girls

Devanie Christie of Crescent medaled in the javelin with a throw of 106-09 that was good enough third place. Taholah’s Rachel Cheney won the even with a 110-03.

Christie also finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.7 seconds. Teammate Ryan Lester was right behind Christie, finishing in fifth place at 17.9 seconds.

Mount Rainier Lutheran’s Rachel Siltman won the 100 hurdles with a dominating time of 16.51 seconds.

Christie and Lester, along with Jandi Frantz and Kellie Belford, also ran with Crescent’s 4×100 relay team that finished sixth.

Bellford, Lester, Frantz and Nycole McNaughton took fourth in the 4×200 relay.

Crescent’s Meghan Shamp had the best showing of North Olympic Peninsula athletes, placing fifth in the discus with a 95-08.

Neah Bay’s Faye Chartraw took sixth in the discus (30-02.5), and Crescent’s Shannon Williams was eighth (28-05).

Clallam Bay eighth-grader Molly McCoy placed eighth in the high jump with a 4-06 mark.
