PORT TOWNSEND — Landon Cray scorched the nets for 20 points to spark Chimacum over archrival Port Townsend in the first round of the Redskins’ Crush in the Slush basketball tournament Wednesday night.
The Cowboys ran out to a 16-3 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 54-26 victory to remain perfect on the year at 8-0 (3-0 in Nisqually League).
The win put Chimacum into the championship game in its division against Seattle Academy on Thursday night. The score was not available by press time.
“We’ll need to play better to beat Seattle Academy,” Chimacum coach Jim Eldridge said. “They are a good team.”
Most of the Cowboys shot poorly against the Redskins.
Except for Cray, Chimacum did not shoot as well as it could shoot, Eldridge added.
Normally good at long distance, the Redskins guarded against 3-pointers and held Cray to three 3-pointers and Quinn Eldridge to only one.
“That was our low on the year for 3-pointers,” Eldridge said.
Eleven of 12 players scored for the Cowboys.
Port Townsend, meanwhile, was missing a couple of players because of the holidays.
Chimacum is having one of its best starts ever by opening the season with eight wins in a row.
Eldridge said he has never seen that kind of start to the season by the Cowboys before.

PORT ANGELES — The Loggers played King’s point-for-point in the second half but 17 turnovers in the first half sealed their fate in nonleague action at the first Port Angeles Winter Classic Tournament on Wednesday.
“We didn’t take care of the ball like we should have in the first half,” Crescent coach Darren Heaward said.
“It was a good game for us in the second half.”
Both teams scored 12 points each in the third quarter and 11 apiece in the fourth period.
But a 22-11 advantage for King’s in the second quarter gave the team a 32-20 lead at halftime.
“The kids played hard,” Heaward said. “It’s good to play a bigger school’s JV because it can be challenging.”
Crescent’s Joel Williams had an outstanding game, scoring a game-high 23 points while pulling down 15 rebounds and grabbing seven steals.
Derrick Findley scored 12 points and had eight rebounds.
Josh Alexander scored a team-high 15 points for King’s.
The Loggers played in the loser’s bracket Thursday, score not available.

PORT TOWNSEND — Irina Lyons burned the nets for 19 points to lead the Port Townsend girls basketball team to a dominating 54-14 nonleague win over Orting on Wednesday.
The Redskins opened the 2011 Crush in the Slush tournament with the game and now will play archrival Chimacum today in the tourney’s second round.
“Defensively, it is as good a game as I have seen us play,” Port Townsend coach Randy Maag said.
“The girls really got after it right from the beginning. They played a full 32 minutes.”
Port Townsend played all 13 athletes on the roster.
It helped that Orting is from the Nisqually League, Maag said.
“That didn’t hurt,” he said.
