PA in Tacoma

Twos were wild for the Port Angeles track team at the Tacoma Invitational at the Lincoln Bowl on Saturday.

Teams from 32 schools, mostly 4A and 3A, gathered under sunny and warm skies for a big-time meet.

Cameron Braithwaite continued to thrill track audiences with a second place triple jump effort of 43-9.5, besting his previous best by one foot and a half.

That jump propelled him to rank fourth at state, 8 inches behind the 2A state leader.

Braithwaite also took third place in the long jump with a leap of 21-0.

Jordan Norberg continued his quest to lead the state in the javelin toss with a second-place throw of 168-4.

Tyler Rixon had a personal best in the shot put with 37-1, taking 21st place.

Kyle Tupper ran good, tough races, doubling up in the 1600 and 3200.

He set a PR in the mile with 4:51 and came back 3 hours later to place 10th in the 3200 with a 10:26.

The Port Angeles girls team made the biggest statement this season at Tacoma.

Sophomore Lizzy Stevenson took a second place in the frosh/soph girls mile with a run of 5:41.

The Roughriders took yet another second place in the pole vault with Tarah Erickson’s vault of 10-6.

Jolene Millsap made the finals in the 100 meters, claiming sixth place with a 13.26.

Elyse Lovgren took a ninth place in the 200 meters with a personal best 27.61.

Freshman Cami Raber took 12th place in the shot put with a personal best of 30-07.5.

Sophomore Brittany Norberg was the surprise of the meet for Port Angeles. She bested her previous javelin toss by over 20 feet, taking fourth in the javelin contest with a 99-06 effort.

Norberg also threw the discus 70-09 for 18th place.

Freshman Annika Pederson took 12 seconds off her 3200 time, getting a solid 12:32 for the two mile race. She placed a solid ninth place in a very fast field of runners.

Coach Kelsey Kenck said, “Our goal was to give Brittany some experience at a big meet.

“Little did we know she would really step up to the competition and do so well facing such stiff competition.”

The girls relay teams also did well. The 4×100 relay team of Millsap, Lovgren, Raber and Allison Hodgin took 12th with a 54.59.

Those same girls teamed up in the 4×200 taking 11th place with 1:56.70.

Boys coach Pat Durr said, “The warm weather was really appreciated by the athletes after suffering through a cold, wet spring.

“We’re careful in placing athletes in these meets. We don’t want kids to get crushed with competition they’re not ready for.

“It’s gratifying to see kids rise up to this elite level of competition and still do well.”
