While Joe Barnes was leading Port Angeles to one of its best finishes ever in boys golf, Sequim and Port Angeles girls in 2A and Chimacum boys in 1A also were concluding their stellar golf seasons this week.
Barnes, the super junior playing his first year of competitive golf, slipped from first to sixth place from the first to second rounds but still finished much higher than a first-year player would be expected to finish.
The 2A boys played at Spanaway’s The Classic Golf Club.
And it didn’t help that winner Tyler Carlson of Clarkston absolutely smoked the field on the second day.
Carlson shot 76 the first day, a stroke behind Barnes, but then fired a 1-under 71 for 18 holes in the second round to win by seven strokes.
Carlson’s 147 was way ahead of runner-up Ryan Wallen of Blaine, who shot 154.
Barnes went from 75 to 82 in the second round to tie for sixth with 157, just three strokes from second.
Jordan Negus of Port Angeles moved up on the leader board even though he was steady with an 80 both days. He finished in a tie for ninth place.
Sequim’s Ryan O’Mera moved up on the leader board when he was a stroke better with an 86 on the second day for 173, good for a tie for 27th.
While others were dropping Garrett Payton of Port Angeles finished higher on the board for 31st place despite shooting a stroke higher the second day at 88 for a two-day total of 175.
The Roughriders finished in fifth place with a score of 75.50.
Interlake nudged out Clarkston for the state championship, 95-94.
Interlake’s top golfer tied for 12th place but the school had all four of its athletes bunched up in the top 20 while Clarkston’s three golfers finished in the top 27.
1A Boys
DuPONT — Chimacum’s Riley Downs and Nathan Browning finished in the top 35 at the Class 1A boys championships at The Home Course.
Downs tied for 29th place by scoring 83 in the first round and 84 in the second for a two-day total of 167.
Browning dropped down some as he shot 88 the second day after shooting 82 the first day for a total of 170 for 35th place.
Ross Kukula of Ilwaco won the individual title with a score of 75 the first day and 74 the second for a total score of 149, winning by two strokes.
2A Girls
SPANAWAY — Hailey Estes of Sequim and Dana Fox of Port Angeles finished their season at Lake Spanaway Golf Course this week.
Estes finished in a two-way tie for 28th place with 193 after scoring 96 the first day and 97 the second.
Fox, meanwhile, took 34th place with 197, 94 in the first round and 103 the second day.
Cherokee Kim of Steilacoom claimed the state title by one stroke when she shot 79 in round one and 74 for a total of 153.
Bellingham easily captured the state team championship with a total score of 152.50. Fife finished second with 62.50.
